Coming to terms...

I've posted and posted, made clicky polls, searched 1000s of names - literally and no matter what I do both DH and I keep coming back to the same name.

Sofia

Why oh why does my fave name have to be so popular?  I know some name has to be #1 or in the top #5 for like, ever but, ugh.  The small state I live in had about 300 named Sophia/Sofia last year.

I was so happy when we fell in love with our DS's name and it's been in the 200-300 the last five years.

Trying to figure out which I might regret most once she's here: not using the name and secretly being sad I passed on my favorite or using the name and regretting I just tagged her for a type of "Jennifer" syndrome.

Just had to say...

I think Sofia is beautiful.

To put a positive spin on it, try to remember that the #1 names don't have as many people as the #1 names did back in the 80s.  For example,

Sophia was number 1 in 2011 with 21,695 little girls being given that name. In 1982, Jennifer was number 1 with 57,099 little girls. That's nearly triple the amount of girls with that name. So while there will likely be other little Sophia's in her school and class, it won't be to the magnitude that Jennifer was.

Don't regret it, use your name. :)

I'm getting so big!

I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.

best point, hopefully with the advent of the internet we will not see another landslide name again. (can I just say most of my Jennys were born in the 70's!!?!!)

Use it! Sofia is beautiful, and even thought it is the #1 name, there's no guarantee that there will necessarily be other Sofias in your daughter's class. To use the Jennifer example, there were some years we had multiples in our class, some years there weren't any. I think you'll regret it more if you pass on a name you love.

I think I would regret not using my favorite name MUCH more than using a popular name. I had a top 3 name growing up, and I actually liked it. I love my name, and liked not having an "odd" name.

I think Sophia/Sofia is beautiful- there's a reason it is so popular. It is a great name. If it's what you love, use it. Just because it's the #1 name doesn't necessarily mean that she'll always be one of many in her class. I went to a tiny high school (~200 people), and there were three guys named Darcy but only one Chris, which I think was the #2 name the year I was born. How would you feel if you went with a less popular name because it was less popular, and ended up having another one in her class anyway?

Im having the same issue, but I think Im over it.  If LO is a girl she will be Emily.  I know its popular, but its a classic name, so its always going to be popular, just like Sophia.  Classic-popular v. trendy-popular are waaaaaaay different in my book.  Good luck!

I say, USE IT! Ever since I was 10, I knew I would have a daughter named Natalie. Then when I was pregnant with a girl, it just happened that Natalie  was very popular. I never thought twice about not using the name.

It sounds like this is just her name. Sophia was always on the top of my list, but given the popularity of the name, I wouldn't want to use it now. However, I didn't even consider it - the name we chose just came to me as "her" name (before I even confirmed that I was pregnant!). Even if I wanted to use it, Sophia doesn't "fit" her, KWIM? I think it would be far to better to name her the name that you keep coming back to, that feels right, that fits, instead of picking another name based on popularity alone and then not only possibly regretting it, but feeling like her name doesn't fit her as well as Sofia would have, if that makes sense.

I think Sofia is a beautiful and classic name that will age well. If you love it, go for it. I would just recommend that you don't pair it with a trendy MN like Rose, Grace, or Marie.

I appreciate all of the encouraging thoughts!  I'm so used to reading replies about "hating" the uber popular names for the only reason that they are popular.  I think I've felt almost a weird pressure to love an unpopular name.

For DS, we narrowed it down to two and chose what we knew was the perfect name for him before we left the hospital.  If Sofia is in the final list, I feel much better about putting aside popularity and going with our heart.

Use the name you love. Jessica was the #1 girl name the year I was born. In my graduating class we literally did not have one Jessica in our class, but had like 10 Katherines which was ranked in the 30s. You just never know!! Again, use the name you love! :)

I picked Eliana for DD because in all my years of teaching I had never heard the name and loved it. It was so "unique" to all my teacher coworkers for all of 1 month and then there were 3!!! In her class at my work...

Use the name if you love it!
