How soon is too soon.....

to take baby out doors after birth?

I was told that you should wait at least 6 weeks if the baby is born during the fall/ winter/spring and 4 weeks for summer.

maybe they're not supposed to, I have no idea what the time limit should be, but I've seen ppl do it. It's not like they are being passed around and spit on by everyone in the mall lol

Oh god no. I would have lost my ever loving mind. I had a summer baby and we were out and about right away.

That is ridiculous! OP, Im a FTM but I say use your common sense. I would never take a baby under 6 weeks old to any crowded place. If your baby gets a fever when they are less than 6 weeks old, they will be hospitalized for at least 2 days. And forget it if they get a virus! No good! I say its safe to go for walks or over to grandmas (for example) but stay away from public places for 6 weeks.

Call back in a few months and your 2 weeks PP, your DH isn't home and won't be for hours, and you have ran out of diapers/formula/what have you. You'll be taking that baby out in public. It's not like your allowing people to rub on the baby for hours on end. You pop them into a carrier and go to the dang store.

I would go crazy if I was cooped up in the house for 6 weeks. Just use some common sense.

We took the boys out as soon as I felt up to it. DS1 went grocery shopping with us at about 1 week old and we took DS2 out at 10 days. I liked just laying around the house for a little while, but after awhile I just had to get out. The boys usually just stayed in their car seats, not like anyone was touching them.

This is obvious.

I took DS to the grocery store on our way home from the hospital. He was 3 days old. I needed food for hecks sake, what are we supposed to do starve? It isn't like people are coming up and wiping their hands across your baby's face... they are in a carseat with a cover on. Also, we took him to church at 2 weeks old and he went every week since. He never got sick until he was about 9 months old from a cold. We have never had a fever here, and I gaurantee that kid was pretty much every where in the first 8 weeks, including golfing and going on short hikes in Zion's national park.

So, yes, use your common sense. Your child won't get germs from people if they aren't touching them or coughing/sneezing in their face. Just keep sanitizer ready and keep a cover on them when they are that new.

We would go shopping at the mall at 1 week but we went during the day when no one was there and grocery shopped with him in a sling. He was outside at  less than a week old by the pool getting some sun since he was slightly jaundice.

When we were in public he was usually in a sling.

When I said this I meant public places where large crowds gather such as the mall or a party where people will want to touch the baby and where germs are everywhere. I also said to go out and used Grandma's as an example. Clearly going somewhere that isnt super crowded where your child will be exposed like the super market during the day is fine. I stand by my opinion. Use common sense.  My niece got RSV when she was 2 weeks old. She ended in the hospital for almost a month and had a feeding tube. Why? Her parents think and DR agreed it could have been because they took her to the mall, and even though she didn't come into direct contact with people, they did. They didn't/couldn't wash their hands every single time they had to touch her and this is a very easy way to transmit germs. FTR, making comments like "OH FTM, just you wait and see..you just wait..." is probably the most annoying thing anyone could ever say.

I call this the paranoia effect.  F'uck staying inside for that long after baby is born.  I had a baby, I'm not an inmate.  With both my girls, I was out and about the day after I got home from the hospital.  Not long excursions, mind you, as I was still pretty sore from delivering, but after spending three days in a hospital room the LAST thing I wanted to do was stay indoors some more.  Talk about cabin fever!  Combined with hormones and lack of sleep, a gal can get pretty grumpy being cooped up all day.

ETA: FWIW, my girls didn't get sick, and to this day they rarely do.  Their immune systems need to develop too, and the only way to do that is to get them out.  Now, am I going to let some obviously sick person near my newborn?  Um, no.  But it's not going to hurt your baby to take them out of the house.

That's excessive, IMO. But, like most things involving your own kid, it's personal.

I am all about getting outside ASAP. DD was born in March and we were out within a week going for walks. Fresh air is good for everyone, and I can't stay in the house for that long. I personally am not comfortable taking baby to large social functions until maybe 6 to 8 weeks, though. I'm talking about weddings, church, that sorta thing where people are germy and in close quarters. I had DD at a family gathering of about 25 people at 4w.

I'm sure I'll be out sooner with this one by necessity. Keeping a 2 year old cooped up for weeks is not feasible. I plan to wear this baby a lot more so people keep hands off. I have a mandatory wedding when baby will be about 8w old and plan to go for a few hours and wear baby.

Is this a joke? For fluck's sake, your baby will be fine. It's ridiculous to think that you should be holed up in your house for a month and a half. Besides, your baby will be exposed to plenty of germs at the doctor's office.

I didn't go out with DS much at first because I was very overwhelmed and being housebound made me very depressed.  Once I started going out I felt human again.  I don't see the big deal about the mall if you have the baby in a stoller or in a carrier.  There is no way I will be staying home for 6 weeks not leaving the house with a 5 year old.  We lose our mind if we stay home for a weekend without doing anything.  I am super germ phobic by the way and use hand sanitizer often.  Seriously, some babies start daycare at 6 weeks, which is the germiest place in the world.

Unless there is a tunnel to your house from the hospital you are bound to go outside ;) Seriously of all the germy places to be hospitals are pretty darn germy. I take mine out pretty soon. I went to my daughters pre-k graduation one day after coming home from the hospital (how is that for germs, they are pre-k kids I am talking about). I kept him in a sling so no one could even peak at him let alone touch him. I washed my hands a lot too. If you are in the grocery store I keep the sun visor thing (at a loss for words) up, then  drape a light weight blanket over. They can still breath, and people do not touch, if you leave it open beware people will come and touch them! I think it is fine to go out, you have to do what you have to do. I could not stay in for 6 weeks, for practical and sanity reasons.

We took DS out almost immediatly...It was within the first 3\4 days of being home. I just didn't let strangers near him and made friends and family wash their hands b4 holding him. I'm goiing to do the same with this LO when hes born

I took DS to walmart at 5 days old. He had a diaper rash that nothing was touching, I was a sobbing, hormonal mess. My mom offered to go to the store for me. Then she saw my condition and said I think you could use a change of scenery and I went too.

I kept him in the carseat, covered with a thin blanket in the basket part of the cart so nosy people couldn't get too close. We survived. I was more worried about taking him for blood work and the Drs office a few times the first week we were home for jaundice checks. I felt like he was way more likely to pick up germs there than just running to the store.

Well, you will have to take your LO to a 1 week doctor appt. I took my DS to that, which was a few days after he was born and also to church about a week after he was born.

I plan to take this LO out as soon as I feel up to it as well.

Do you plan on having other children?  Because there is no germier person than a toddler who goes to daycare, hand to God.  So once you have a second, your second child will be less likely to get sick by passing them every person in the food court than by just living in the same house as your adorable human petri dish.  I don't say this to shitt on FTMs but there are luxuries you see as absolute necessities the first time around that you realize later just aren't possible to maintain.

LOL to all of this.

FWIW, we had DD (November baby) at Target on the way home from her 4-day check up, took her to church for various things, to the grocery store, etc.  We flew to Florida with her when she was 5 weeks old.  We kept her bundled up in her carseat, or wore her in a sling or carrier, and kept a tube of Purell on hand.
