Ultrasound question

Good evening all...so I have a question. I am in the last 10 wks of pregnancy and when I asked my midwife when my next ultrasound would be, she said that I would not be having one unless they felt there was a problem with the baby. That just doesn't sit well with me. My last ultrasound was a fetal echo but that was more to look closely at the heart due to prior issues and that was in October. Shouldn't they do at least one more to make sure the weight is ok, the baby is in the right position and all the other final checks? Is it just me or am I expecting too much...

The only reason why I got one past my 18 weeks anatomy scan was because LO was measuring 3-4 weeks ahead via the belly/tape measure estimates. Your mw or ob should be able to to tell LOs position by feeling your belly and they will check heartbeat at every appointment. If they even suspect something could possibly be off- they will order another one. But most of my girlfriends never got one in the 3rd tri and were all fine.

Weight on ultrasound are often off so late in the game. If get concerned about small birth weight and IUGR, or low fluid but usually your provider is tipped off because your fundal height will be off. If your fundal height is off usually they will do an ultrasound, but if you are measuring on, baby is moving well, heart rate is good there you do not need one in the third trimester. You can tell where the baby is externally with out an ultrasound, and sometimes the little ones who hang out breech will turn last minute. If you are really worried bring up your concerns with your CNM, either she can ease them, or maybe she will order an ultrasound. Keep in mind that if an ultrasound is not medically indicated most likely you will be the one paying for every penny rather than your insurance.

Late term ultrasounds are super unnecessary. I had one on Monday and she's so big you could hardly see her, the measurements aren't very precise [notoriously a 2 pound buffer on size estimates] and they can tell based of fundal height if there's any need to check via ultrasound on amniotic fluid.

Doctors can tell based of feeling your abdomen if baby is head up or down because they do it all the time but again if there is any cause for concern they will do an ultrasound.

I guess it was nice seeing her but there was no medical need to do an ultrasound. Even I could tell she was head down, spine along my left side & feet kicking my right side just by the way she moves - didn't need an ultrasound to know that & since my fundal height has been great we knew I wasn't having a problem with my fluids.

Nope no more peeks at baby unless there's a cause for concern. They'll only need to check weight and fluid if you're measuring far ahead or another test looked concerning.

I had one u/s with this pregnancy and don't expect any more unless something were to happen.

If everything looks/sounds fine then just sit back and enjoy it!!

I was originally only supposed to have the one u/s at 20 weeks. I've only had more because I became high risk.

They can check to see if baby is breech or not without an u/s and weight estimates are almost always off at this point. There's no need to have one.

Same as PPs, unless there's a problem a U/S isn't necessary. My last was in second tri, and I won't have anymore unless something goes wrong.

I had a fetal echo for my LO at 22 weeks, and I got another u/s 2 weeks ago (33 weeks) to check on his growth and development but only because the echo came back less than steller. So they needed to make sure his heart was handling his size and to make sure he wasn't under fetal stress as he got bigger. If your LO's came back good, that's prob why they dont think its nessasary to give you one.

With that being said, it is a routine thing at my cousins OB for everyone to get a 34 week u/s. So I guess it all depends where you go, and what practices they excersize (sp?)

We do them here after the 18 week just to see baby position. For me they are checking LO's growth because I have had HG this entire time and they want to make sure baby is still growing. But I go to an OB office, not a midwife.

I am getting an ultra sound on Monday at 35 weeks. The reason being that through out this entire pregnancy I have had a cyst in my right ovary. I have had several ultra sounds thoughout the pregnancy and usuallly my OB only does one for the anatomy scan unless you opt to do the 12 week scan. They are checking the cyst out to make sure that its not in the way of baby!! It feels like the last doctor milestone before baby arrives. I am so anxious!!!

Mine only does the 2 u/s unless there's a problem.  I had to have one because I was measuring so small so they wanted to check to make sure he was doing alright. I wanted to see him again and was a little bummed that I didn't get any more ultrasounds until they wanted to do one because I was small and there might be a problem.  That terrified me! The 4 days between my dr's appt and the ultrasound were SO stressful, I was so happy to find out that everything is ok.

I had 2 ultrasounds with each pregnancy.  One at 10ish weeks and one at 20ish weeks.

Unless there is a known problem they are monitoring, there is no need for an ultrasound.

I won't get one unless they think she's breech or some other issue comes up.  While it would be nice, I'm fine with that.  I can feel her so much when she moves and squirms, I doubt there is anything new a u/s would tell us anyway!

I am so sorry for your loss.

While I agree with what other people are saying (that unless their is a medical concern or need it is not uncommon to not have another ultrasound), I also strongly believe in helping to preserve the mother's emotional well being. After your experience, I would be nervous too (I am PgAL following two early miscarriages and know how hard that has been....I can't imagine the pain you must have felt going through a NICU stay). I think you should have a talk with your CNW about your concerns and, if you think having another one would give you some piece of mind, ask about it.

I'm glad I found this post.  I totally thought a 3rd trimester u/s was normal.  I was very surprised when I learned that my Dr didn't do it.  I'm bummed - I was so excited to see how she's grown.  Also - they were a little uncertain on the gender last time, but said there was about 97% chance it was female.  I figured this time it could be more definitive.
