Breastmilk jaundice?

DD was born 3weeks ago and was 6 weeks premature and we've been struggling with jaundice ever since. Today the doctor said he thought it was breastmilk jaundice. Has anyone had this issue? I'm concerned with long term effects and our course of action. So far it sounds like we may have to have DD's bilirubin levels tested daily until they fall significantly lower.

My little guy started out with jaundice and still had it 3 weeks later.  Pedi said it was breastmilk jaundice and to switch over to formula for a few days and that would clear it up.  My little guy also seemed dairy sensitive on my milk so once I switched to a formula that he liked, I stayed on the formula.  His jaundice cleared up in about 5 days.  Some people say that breastmilk jaundice clears up on its own by 6 months, but I didn't like that thought at all.

That sounds very anti-BF to me. I would seek a second opinion; supplementing your LO with formula could destroy your BF relationship, introduce pathogens to his system and tank your supply. I would not take that advice lightly at all.

Here is a helpful link to studies on BF and jaundice:

I'd do the reading, arm yourself with knowledge before you commit to anything!

both my kids had breastmilk jaundice (something in my breast milk apparently).

My kids had really low levels so my ped wasn't concerned and I didn't switch to formula but agreed that if DD or DS had it after her 3 month appointment I would switch to formula for 24 hours then back to bfing. I think with DD it cleared up by her 3 month check up and DS was 2 months...I think.

My kids had really bad colic and reflux (DD was worse than DS) so my ped told me if we switched to formula we could expect the colic & reflux to be much much worse so we wanted to keep them only on breast milk, mylicon, and Zantac and only do if I "had to".

Point is you don't have to go on formula if the levels are low. They will outgrow it!

Ds has been monitored with this for four weeks now. His numbers are very slowly dropping.  It made me nervous how slow his numbers were dropping, so for three days straight, I ff and used the bilIblanket.  His number dropped a whopping half a point.  It dropped more than that on previous times without ff and just using the blanket.  I would def not rec ff...it didn't do anything and upset ds belly.  Unless his levels are super high, I wouldn't stress.

My DD was 5 weeks early and was fed breast milk from the start. Her jaundice levels were high due to the milk, so we had to switch to formula to bring her levels down. The Pedi said that the formula flushes out their system faster than breast milk. Once her levels were below a 10, we were able to feed her breast milk again. I just hope her levels stay down.
