OB vs family dr

I just found out I'm pregnant over the weekend and haven't made a Dr appointment yet because we're new in town and don't have any Drs yet. I'm wondering if I should find a general practitioner and go there first or just skip straight to an OB. According to the Bump's due date calculator and other tools, I could be 8 weeks.

find an OB a family dr will just draw blood for and hcg to confirm pregnancy then tell you to get an OB.  A OB will usually do an ultrasound between 8 to 10 weeks to estimate due date. Some wait till later to do u\s.

Not necessarily true.  Some family medicine practitioners practice OB care and can perform full prenatal care and delivery.  However, they cannot perform a c-section at the time of delivery if it is needed.  You would have to specifically ask the family medicine office if their docs do OB care because not all do given the high liability associated with OB.

Personally, I would prefer to have my OB care with an OB doctor.

It depends on a lot of things ... including how your insurance works. For instance, my insurance requires that I get a referral from my primary care physician for all specialists, including OBs. So if I went straight to an OB I would end up paying a ton of money out of pocket.

Thanks! I plan on finding an OB and calling this afternoon. Any advice on what to ask or say when I call? I hate talking on the phone and tend to stumble a bit when I'm talking to someone I don't know.

I think you can just say that you're pregnant/have had a positive pregnancy test, and would like to set up a prenatal appointment. The receptionist will probably ask if you know how far along you are, and go from there.

I stick with my family doctor for my pregnancies, but not all family doctors will deliver babies. If you don't have a doctor at all, you're probably best to just go with an OB unless you have a lead on a family doctor that likes to do pregnancies and babies.

My family practice doc does full maternity care (including delivery) which is why I chose her. I also have an OB/GYN and the option of using a hospital midwife or birth center/homebirth licensed midwife. There are many options available for many types of care, so the important thing is to determine your insurance coverage and who you want to care for you and attend your birth. OBs are trained surgeons able to perform cesareans and work on the scope of pregnancy specifically moderate to higher risk. Any other provider who has training and liability coverage can care for and catch babies, especially for healthy/low risk pregnancies.

Definately go to an OB for your pregnancy.
