FYI: IVF & Taxes

With tax season approaching I thought I'd share this little bit of information that I just received from my RE's office.Smile

Many of the IVF expenses are tax deductible! Information is available in IRS Publication 17 – “Your Federal Income Tax” and IRS Publication 502 “Medical and Dental Expenses” .Certain medical expenses may be deducted if you itemize on Schedule A (Form 1040). Deductions which apply to IVF are:

Fees for fertility enhancement (procedures such as in vitro fertilization, including temporary storage of eggs and sperm)

Fees for doctors and surgeons (sonograms, egg retrieval, anesthesia)

Fees for hospital services, laboratory, surgical, obstetrical, nursing and x-ray services (blood tests, sperm evaluation)

Cost of transportation for needed medical care (air fare, mileage -22 cents/mile for 2006- or out of pocket expenses –cost of gas, oil- not including general maintenance expenses)

Medical and hospital insurance premiums

Prescribed medicine (all IVF drugs)

Lodging necessary for medical treatment ($50/night per person – limited to two people – the person receiving treatment and a companion)

Well, BRAVO, Double.

Because this convo has been so thoroughly derailed, I figured I'd try to bring things back around to taxes...

The DH and I tried to get a deduction last year but it turned out we would have to have spent a lot more money than we did, which seems insane. But I still think adding everything up to see if you'd qualify is worth it, particularly if you're OOP.

You all are cracking me UP with this gigantic toilet!!!!!!!!!

Anywho, I came across this when reading about our lovely healthcare reform... "Currently, out-of-pocket medical costs only are deductible to the extent they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. For 2013, that hurdle will rise to 10%. But if you're 65 or older, that threshold remains frozen at 7.5% through 2016."
