Buying clothes on clearance for next season

I would love to buy LO some clothes for next year when it's on clearance.  Does anyone else do this?  How do you estimate how big LO will be?  My LO is 10 months, and about 23-24 lbs and a little over 30 inches - I have no clue how  to estimate her growth!

Any advice?

I love buying clothes on clearance!!

I buy one size bigger than the age he will be for that season. For example, summer stuff - he will be about 18 months next summer, so I'd get 24 month size. But I guess it depends on how your child is. Your little girl seems like she's probably in 12 month clothes, so adding one size up from age sounds about right.

For stuff that isn't season dependent (plain short sleeved onesies, normal weight pants, socks) I'll buy a few sizes (24 month, 2T, 3T etc)

For things that I don't want to buy and then possibly not have him wear - infant snow suit, baby swim trunks, shorts, it depends on the price. If it's a crazy good deal, I just buy one. If it doesn't get worn, I'll give it my my sister for my nephew that's like 10 months younger.

The whole size thing is much much easier when they are older. Last spring I bought SS a winter coat and snow pants, he was wearing size 3T  last year, so I bought him 4T on clearance. Buying something bigger is always a good bet, cuz they just keep growing and it will fit them eventually!

I tried to buy my son clothes ahead of time and now ended up with a bunch of short sleeve onesies that fit now but probably will not next summer so I just bought a long sleeve tee and added it underneath the onesies.

Yup.  I love doing this.  DS is a little small so I aim for .5 or 1 full size bigger.  I've already bought almost his entire winter clothing for next year (2T) from brand labels at 25% or less what it would have cost full price.

I buy most my kids clothes early.  For Cordelia (who is 10 months old) I figure once she is 1 she will be in 18 months clothes through when she is 18 months.  Then 24 months for up to 2 years old.  Once she is 2 years old I have 2T for her. Then they pretty much wear (normally) 2T for  2 year olds, 3T for 3 year olds, ect.

She'll probably slow her growth soon.  My DD has always been at the top of the charts and is holding steady in 24 month clothes right now.  Her 18 month shirt are getting snug and short.  She was just over 26 pounds and 32.5 inches at her 15 month appointment.

This is what happened to me too.

For the first probably 6-8 months of his life, DS was very true to size (so at 6 months, he fit into 6 month stuff perfectly).  Now he's 11 months old and wearing 18 month old stuff.  So I'm ridiculously nervous that I'm going to end up with a bunch of clothes that can never be worn.

I might try this for things where there is a little more give, like shirts and shorts.  But for things where the size is more important (pants, shoes), I'll probably hold off.

It would be awesome to have a crystal ball though, because those clearance deals are so hard to pass up!

I did this with DD1, and ended up with weather dependent clothing she couldn't wear. I kept them because I thought I might have another child and luckily (!!!) I had another girl. But they were both born on March 15, so the same clothes DD1 didn't wear, DD2 isn't going to be able to wear. DD2 is nine months, but in 12-18, and some 18 month clothing, and some of that is tight, to be honest, 24 lbs and 30 inches long. When DD2 was born she was really skinny, but chunked up at about 4-5 months, so even a smaller child or bigger child can fluctuate in how they grow. I wouldn't really buy too much just because it is on clearance. If you want really good buys, go to a nice second hand or consignment shop. They will carry higher end stuff in new or like new condition, and at good prices. Or just tell your friends who have older children to pass their clothes on. Otherwise, I wouldn't buy it if you don't need it right away. Unless, of course, its a dollar or something ;)
