9 weeks, and no ultrasound, doppler, HGC levels, etc. yet

i'm at a family health practice that is more on the midwife side than traditional OBs...and it's starting to drive me crazy. i have a few friends who are pregnant as well, and they have had so many more tests than i have.

trying not to worry, because i haven't had much in the way of bad symptoms, but i can't stop obsessing about a possible missed miscarriage.

and with xmas holiday coming, i'd love to share my news with my family. but i'm afraid to do it, especially since i have no idea how far along i really am, if there is a heartbeat, etc.

anyone else in this scenario? i don't want to be a jerk and go in demanding tests, but i'm also going nuts.

totally normal.  a lot of practices wont see people till 8-10 weeks.  most people do not have hcg levels checked - i have not with either pregnancy.  as for early ultrasounds, a lot of places just do one at 20 weeks - totally normal.

if you are really stressed, you could always call them and ask about an ultrasound, however if not medically indicated you may have to foot the bill out of pocket as it likely will not be covered by insurance.

It's completely normal to not have any of those tests done. Most people who have them done have a good reason for it (IVF, recurrent miscarriages, etc). Relax. Missed miscarriages are incredibly rare.

You can calculate how far along you are based on your LMP.

I know it's difficult to wait, but what you are experiencing is completely normal for someone without IF issues or prior losses.  While some practices are more progressive with testing and early u/s than others, it's not uncommon have none of those things early in your PG.  Good luck!

When I found out I was PG I literally had no clue how far along I was.  I could have been as far along as 12 weeks, so the doctor really wanted to find out and did a u/s.  If it hadn't been for that I still would have had only a pee test at 8 weeks.  It's not unheard of, especially with the midwifery style of care.  I'm sure if they aren't worried you have nothing to worry about and everything is going great.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

My OB's office is like yours. If you know your LMP, there is no US until 12 weeks if opting in for NT screen or 20 if not (unless other risk factors). The wait is killer, I hear you!  The only reason I had one early is for spotting (both times).

Same here. Early ultrasound because of spotting, but if that hadn't been happening I wouldn't have even seen a doctor until 12 weeks. I had an 8 week appointment with a nurse who took my family history and a battery of lab work (hemoglobin, hiv, syphallus, urinalysis, etc.)

I have to wait a bit too (not as long as you, fortunately!) so I will be visiting one of the elective 3D/4D places to have a dating ultrasound at 7 weeks.  It's only $60 and worth every penny for peace of mind.  Do you have this option?

My doctor doesn't need to see me until 12 weeks, unless I have problems. He doesn't do betas, or ultrasounds unless there is a problem either. I'm requesting the NT scan around 13 weeks but otherwise, an uncomplicated pregnancy will only have the anatomy scan at 1822 weeks. I don't think what you're experiencing is out of the ordinary at all.

I am using an OB this time and used a midwife last time, both scheduled me for 8 weeks and I know their policy is 8-10.

My first pregnancy I had one at 13 weeks and one at 19 weeks. My first time around I couldn't wait! Now knowing how my body deals with pregnancy I am much more relaxed. I go for my first appt with my midwife on the second and probably will have to wait a while to get an ultrasound. Hope the wait goes quick for you!

I haven't had any testing other than a few hpts and a urine test at the lab (no betas, etc). I'm planning on having a homebirth with a midwife, but I am seeing my hmo ob's office for my first two appointments (one educational tomorrow and one with my ob on 1/7) so that I can have an early (8-9 week) ultrasound for peace of mind. After that I won't have any additional testing unless absolutely necessary and only one u/s at 20 weeks. Sometimes talking with others or reading boards can give the sense that all of that is normal--and it may be more common now than in the past--but it's not really. Just try to be patient and enjoy your pregnancy!

Calculating by your LMP isn't always accurate. If you really have no idea how far along you are and are just guessing at 9 weeks, I'd request a dating ultrasound; especially if you'd like to get the NT scan done, which has to be done during specific weeks.

I'm in the same situation. I am at 9 weeks and had my first appt but only got some blood drawn. My next appt til Jan 8th and not sure if I will even get an US then but I was really hoping for an US image to present to our families when we announce at Christmas. I guess if my Dr isn't concerned then I shouldn't be, I'm just a worrier by nature and this is my first pregnancy. I have very few symptoms so I would love a visual confirmation. Luckily i have a lot of positive support from the few I have told so I'm just staying positive and hopeful. Hope you're able to do the same!

I am in the same boat! 8w4d and practically had to beg my doctor to send me for a dating ultrasound. We go on Monday, and I am anxious as ever but have been warned from our family doctor that the tech likely won't give us a show by any means. I'll be calling in at the end of the week though to ask for the results at least. We would like to announce to our immediate family on Xmas as well if all goes well nxt week. I've had my hcg levels tested twice, I'll have those results next week too. With it being our first, it's natural to be worried. Relieving to see others have the same thoughts! Gdluck!!
