What would Opie be short for?

I like the name Opie, but it sounds too much like a NN to me, and I like the idea of having a "grown up" sounding name to use later in life, if desired.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out what Opie would be short for, though. Or is it usually a derivative of the initials O.P. (e.g., Oliver Patrick, etc.)?

MrsTBird:
Opal or maybe Ophelia.

Sorry, I should have specified. For a boy. Like Opie Taylor from the Andy Griffith Show, or the character from Sons of Anarchy.

Sorry, but WHY?

If you really like it as a NN then use it as a NN and give your child a real name for the birth certificate.  Doesn't have to be related, it could be Neil - but if you want Opie as a NN use it.  Just, for the sake of the child, don't make it the formal name!

Calm down. Just tossing around ideas - we've still got 20 weeks to go. I already said I didn't like it as a formal name. I was just curious if anyone knew what it would be short for, since I couldn't find that info.

I feel like it is just a NN that "stuck" in most cases...also, that (at least in my area) it has a derogatory "hillbilly" sort of vibe.

I did some googling and everything I found suggests it's just a NN.

My friend called her grandfather Opie...so I associate it with the grandparent nn's not child friendly nn's...(like opa, oma, nana, papa, etc....) I would think it was very strange to hear on a child....

This. The only time I have heard Opie it is in place of "grandpa," "papa," etc.

I like the idea of Oliver Patrick, nn Opie.

I actually think it's cute, but, yeah, it's definitely more nicknamey. From what I can find, they named the character of Opie on the Andy Griffith show after a popular 40s and 50s bandleader named Opie Cates. His real name was Opal Taft Cates.

I always thought is was one of those nick-namey sounding stand alone names. I immediately think of:

which makes me sad since he was one of my favorite characters and he got his head bashed in a few episodes ago :(

My first thought also his name is Harry but he goes by Opie so  it is not short for anything.

I think Opie is one of those names that is just given not really a shortened version of anything. Kinda like Buddy.
