Baby sleeping to much?

How much is to much for a baby to sleep? My LO is almost a week old and I feel like he sleeps constantly. Takes about 2 ounces usually when he wakes up every 3-4 hours. He's a very lazy eater too has to have a lot of coaxing to stay awake and eat. I have a 3 year old but seems like she was always a good eater so i'm not sure if this is normal or not. Also, every one in awhile he like shivers almost. Not sure if hes cold or what's going on with this. Everything is making me paranoid.

My DS slept almost constantly for the first few weeks. I also wondered if this was normal but everyone assured me it was. Eventually the amount of time he would stay awake in between of feedings began slowly increasing. As long as your baby isn't sleeping all day and then staying up all night having their days and night reversed then it seems normal that newborns just sleep a lot!

My LO is 3 weeks old and we had problems getting her to eat b/s she was so sleepy.  The peds doc told us to wake her every 3 hours to feed, but even though it was so hard.  We'd have to struggle to get her to wake up enough to eat and shed zonk right out afterward.  Now that she's 4 weeks and passed her birth weight, we've started letting her sleep 4 hours.  Most of the time she starts stirring before then but we always wake her for a 4 hour feed.  We were told newborns are very sleepy.  As long as you're waking then every 3-4 hours to eat and they're gaining weight, let LO sleep as long as they want.

My LO did the same thing, even when it came to eating. I had to strip him down to his diaper and put a cold rag on him to get him to wake up and eat!

If you are really worried, I'd call your pediatrician...that's what they are there for!

My baby is 5 weeks old, and he sleeps almost all day long as well. He is awake for a total of 23 hours max every day. My pedi says that's nothing to worry about.

To make him eat when he is sleeping, I find what works best for me is to change his diaper before a feed. He absolutely hates it, and cries, which makes him more awake to eat.

Also he eats really well after a bath.

Everything he's doing is normal.  When Aria was that age, we had a hard time keeping her awake to eat.  Try tapping his feet, tickling, undressing, diaper changing, damp rag.
