BP 138/88... High?

Is this high to you? My doctor said he's not worried "yet" but has me coming back on Monday to get it checked.

I don't have any other symptoms of preeclampsia.

I'm a little shaken only because I have never had an abnormal BP reading in my life.

Just looking for thoughts/experiences.

Thanks for sharing.

It's borderline. Might be a one time thing. You could buy a monitor.

It seems a little high but it's only one reading.  And honestly it's not even that bad.  I wouldn't worry about it until Monday and they take it again.  If you're concerned over the weekend, go to the pharmacy and check it yourself.

It is higher than what they typically like to see, but typically they want to see a trend of higher blood pressures....not just one reading as many things that alter a single reading. I would wait and see what the exam on Monday shows.

Also, I would steer away from using the blood pressure machines at the grocery store for now. While those can be good to give a "ball park", they are notoriously inaccurate because not every adult fits the same size cuff. If the cuff isn't sized appropriately you can get false readings.

My OB would consider that borderline high but they don't seriously start to worry until 140/90. I hope it is down at your next appt!

I've been pretty consistently getting about 140/80 at my appointments. Normally I'm about 110/70.

I had it two days in a row when it first showed up high so they tested my urine (no protein) and sent me to Labor and Delivery for a non stress test. The baby and I passed. So since then they have kept checking it- they find if I lay down on my side for a bit and then they retest it goes lower (not a ton but a little).

For now they aren't worried, it just seems borderline and as long as it doesn't get worse they are letting me be. I go in at least once a week just for a spot check though and that seems to be my new "normal" number for now.

Like PP said, I wouldn't worry yet. It's the high BP PLUS abnormal labs like low platelets, elevated liver function, and protein in the urine that you should worry about Smile

It's not great by any means but could be a fluke.  What matters the most is what's normal for you and if they see an upward trend in the readings so they just have to keep an eye on it.  Hopefully it turns out to be nothing!

Over 140/90 is considered high, so that is getting there. I think a lot depends on your past readings. I have been 130s/80s this whole pregnancy, and my doctor has definitely kept an eye on it. So far it has stayed stable and not gone up, so he is not worried. He just wants to be mindful of it. Good luck. Hope it stays down!

Its definately borderline (high in pregnancy is considered 140/90, at least thats what my OB goes by). But one reading is like a snap shot in time, it could have gone down ten minutes later. I would just try to relax, lay on your left side, and just veg a little till your next appt and see if it goes down. Good Luck

This was the same with my OB.
