How much should I pay a babysitter?

I have never needed a sitter other than close family or my best friend but, my best friend is having a wedding party/shower and my family is invited and in-laws will be out of town.  A close friend of my sister is a nanny (she is almost 22) and I have asked her to babysit.  Of course she said, just pay me however much you want...So how much do I give?? She will be watching my 2 year old (who will be in bed the majority of the time) and by then my baby will be 4 months. It will be for about 6 hours at night.  Sorry so long, I am clueless when it comes to this. :)

I would say 10 dollars an hour, especially since the older of your two kids will be sleeping most of the time. 60 dollars for 6 hours of nighttime babysitting seems more than reasonable. You could always add a little bit more if you think 60 doesn't sound like enough but personally I wouldn't go much higher than that.

I notice you live in Chicago, IL, which would probably entail a slightly higher rate than elsewhere. I'd err on the side of a bit higher, $12 - $15, especially since she is a nanny by trade. In MI, we paid the sitter we hired to watch our wedding guests children $10 per hr, which was in a small town and that seemed to be standard for that area.

I'd do $12-15 for two kids, even if one is sleeping most of the time.

I would just split the difference and pay $75 for the night.
