vitamin K??

Anybody know why they give new borns vitamin K right after birth?

I saw it as an option on the bump's birth plan example...i don't recall being told about this with my first baby nine years ago....

Thought I would come out of lurking to answer this. It's for blood clotting to prevent unexpected hemorrhaging of the newborn.

Vitamin K helps you clot... so it keeps them from bleeding too much if something happens/when they give shots. I have a natural vitamin K deficiency, my body just doesnt process or hold enough of it unless I am taking supplements and eating a ton of vK rich foods, as a result I bleed like crazy even when I get an immunization or paper cut.
