Ever feel discouraged, like you've seen every name out there?

And the ones you haven't seen... well, there's probably a reason?

I know we still have time, but DH and I don't agree on names at all. I've gone through all the lists on nameberry, the SSA top 1000 and numerous other sites.

I think the only way this kid is getting named is if one of us compromises, which sucks. I hate that we can't find a name we both love.

What about going through Beyond the top 1000 SSA list?  Three of our top girl names aren't in the top 1000 SSA names.

One of our problems is that DH doesn't like anything the slightest bit unique, so beyond the top 1000 would probably not help us much.

Well one of our to names- Audra might be too unique, but Colette is a very well known, but uncommon name. 

Do you have names you guys like, but not love?  Or no liked names at all?  Is there a certain criteria you have?

I was feeling that way about girl names until someone suggested the website nameberry yesterday. Now I've found a number of names that we're considering.

And compromise isn't all that bad. Both DH and I compromised on our DD's name, and now we both love it and couldn't imagine her as anything else.  He had his #1 fav, I had mine, but we ended up naming her a mutual favorite.  No regrets.

And if you both feel like you're not accomplishing anything by talking about names, take a break.  Give the name talk a rest for a week or two and then revisit.

Maybe call LO by a name a week and see if you start to love it?  This is what we did and realized we really couldn't imagine 4 of the 5 top names.  DD was named the other name on the list and we love it.

A strategy that really helped us was to put up a whiteboard in the living room. We could each write names we liked on it, but could not comment on or criticize the other person's names. 

The daily exposure actually helped several names grow on us both, and we wound up agreeing on a choice that was not mutual by any means when it was first written on the board.

This.  I honeslty wouldn't say I loved my LO's name right away, but it was the first boy name that DH didn't straight up say no to.  Then we thought it was it and after using it, it just became THE name.  Yes about 4 weeks before my DD I was having concern maybe we decided wrong, but I think thats only normal.  I couldn't imagine him with anything else.

I 2nd taking a break from baby name pressure. Sometimes you just need to relax and a name will come to you. If you want to be more proactive, I would suggest going to a kids hang-out and listening in on the parents calling their kids - like a mall play area, McD playland, zoo, museum, etc. Sometimes you've seen a name on paper 100 times, but you don't consider it until you hear it in a real-life circumstance.

This is similar to what we did. At the end of the week, we took names out of the running that we didn't like at all. Some weeks no names made it. Once we had enough names we liked, we just wrote those down, then took the names out that didn't seem "right",  then we found DDs name. :)

Maybe you could put "First Name" and "Middle Name" on pieces of paper, and put them in a bowl. You each draw one out, and you get to pick that name.

Voila. Compromise and you both get to use a name you like.
