Should I return it?

So I got the JJ Cole Bundle me for the carseat because I want LO to be all warm when he's born in the middle of the winter. However, I heard that they are unsafe but why would they sell them if they were? Wouldn't they be recalled? Anyway, should I return it, get a shower cap kind or just put blankets over him? What are you doing for your winter baby?

i didn't use one with DS1 but he was april. i just used blankets and layers. i don't know if i'll use one this time around either. i'll probably use a shower cap type or else just blankets. it's easier to get them in and out

I would return it. We just used a blanket over DS, but I hear good things about the shower-cap style covers as well.

Its not safe because it goes in between the baby and the car seat.  Return it and get a shower cap style, or use blankets.  You cant assume that just because something is on the market, it is safe.  Lots of things are sold everyday that are not necessarily safe.

We bought the JJ Cole shower cap style carseat cover.

The bundle me can be used in a stroller or when just carrying the carseat, but is not safe to use IN the car!

All of this.  I got the shower cap style one and I think it will keep LO very warm.  If you look back to old posts, there was a very good post that someone put on here with pictures of what a baby looks like in a snowsuit in their carseat and how much extra room they have in the same car seat without the snowsuit.  The issue is that the straps do not go tight enough or sometimes even into the right position with that much bulk.  In many cases we moms are so worried about our little ones not being cold, they end up sweating because we way over did it.  I deal with Michigan winters and can say that from my past experience with my son :)

If you will have LO in a stroller, like for walks or jogging, then you might want it for that.  Otherwise, I would probably return it too.  There are tons of safer alternatives.

DD was born in October '10 and we just used blankets to keep her warm when we went out. Also proper clothing :)

We always used the shower cap style and would put a few thin blankets in there depending on how cold it was.

Our car seat comes with a little cap that goes over the bottom of the seat so a blanket will not fall out of it.

I have a cover given to me that is similar, but with thin material in the back, heavy layer is only over the baby. We plan to use it in town very small isolated town, no busy areas or highways, and just remove it for the odd highway trip to see relatives. I'm usually paranoid about safety, but I think for the amount we go out pretty much just for groceries that its not a big deal.

I wouldn't use it. I have the shower cap kind, and I've heard those technically are not safe either but nothing goes between that and any restraints...so I feel better about the cap style.

I would return/exchange it for a shower-cap style cover.  You can also tuck a few blankets in underneath the cover.  I don't think they'd be recalled necessarily, because you can use them in a stroller safely, but I am pretty sure every car seat manual will tell you not to use car seat accessories that interfere with the use of the seat (ie. between baby and seat).

I bought the showercap style one for this baby, had the BundleMe last time but never used it because I didn't like the way it fit (and he was an August baby, so honestly we didn't need it after all).

I just tried the showercap one on today, and it fits great (I have the Chicco Keyfit), so I am glad I made the switch.

Definitely return it. The bundle me is a perfectly safe item when used in a stroller, which is how it's intended. It's not being recalled because it's not meant to be a carseat product, it's meant to be a stroller product (and for that it was a lifeline when we were living in NYC and walking everywhere all the time regardless of weather). The shower cap style is the only kind you can use on a carseat though. Anything else creates slack in the straps and can mask other issues with how the harness is being used, which could cause the carseat to fail in an accident.
