SO and I are LOLing

SO and I went to Target today to register for our baby shower only to realize WE KNOW NOTHING! I kept saying, "I think we need this" and he kept saying "why, for what?" I have no answers...

The aisles looked scary. Any other FTM's more afraid of the trinkets in the baby section than of child birth??

LOL. We brought my sister with us when we registered because she had just been through it all. Are you close with anyone who could go with you and tell you what you will need? It was a lifesaver!

I SO understand what you are saying. I took my sister and her Partner along (both have children) Without them I would have totally been lost, I would have had no clue what bottles to pick...what sleepers...I know NOTHING!

When we registered, we were in BRU for 3 hours, and we didn't look at any furniture.  I read Baby Bargains before going so I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, apparently not.  Now I'm sure I could go in and do the whole thing in 30 minutes.

I did my registry at Target (FTM here), but I did it online -- they have a nice tool that tells you what categories of things you probably need.  When I didn't have a product recommendation to go on frmo a friend, I compared user reviews (hightest number of postive reviews)

A couple of times I have gotten an itch to get started on the registry, and I come up against the same thing I think I going to get my friend who has three to give me some direction. If I took DH to the store we would be in the same boat. Only he would insist that we don't need anything.

I would have been lost without the Baby Bargains book.  I found it really helpful in avoiding things that were unnecessary.

Read Baby Bargains and make lists before you register.  Ours was pretty easy since I had done all the research beforehand and we just had to pick out patterns and stuff.

Try Lucie's list too, it's a blog type thing where she makes a registry with all the things you need and what brands are good for the money.

This. I read the book, made a list, and we were good to go. Highly recommend Baby Bargains-you might be able to get it from your local library.

I have done my major researching on Amazon.  Their registry has the basics (feeding, traveling, sleeping, etc) and going through the ratings I have narrowed down what we want. If I see the item cheaper at an actual store I just get it there, but for the most part Amazon's prices are average if not better

The first time DH and I registered, we went to BRU for over an hour and only put down a carseat and stroller. Smile

Don't worry. Just get advice from friends/family and do research. That's what I did and really, the only I needed to buy after DS was born was a swing.

Good luck!

DH and I had no idea.  We went to BRU and before we started our registry, they gave us a booklet that lists all the items you will most likely need and went through the booklet explaining each section/why it's there, etc.  They also had little bundles in some sections--for example if you're breastfeeding they had a bundle of supplies that go with the breast pump that you can just scan one thing and all the items get added to the registry.  It really helped.  We went around the store using the booklet.  Then went home and added/deleted items after doing more research online.  I also had a couple of friends of mine go through my registry and they tell me things I should add/delete.

It recommends brands and gives you ideas about past recalls.  It gives a good/better/best rating from what I remember (DS is 5 years old so it's been a while).

This made my DH and I giggle. This is exactly what we saw happening when the time comes for us to try. So, I asked a friend with a 2 month old to come with me the first time, next week. She is close enough to it, that she knows what was a waste, what was absolutely necessary, and what all that crap in the store does (or is supposed to do)!

I took my mother in law with me to register, but anyone who already has children will be a big help and be able to provide guidance.

A friend just had her baby, what I've observed over the last week is:

burp cloths
onesies
swaddling blankets
the rock-and-play
the pack and play (as a changing table)
diapers and wipes
bottles and formula (even if just as insurance, you want to be able to supplement without any drama and hassle if baby is hungry and breast feeding is a struggle)
nursing pads

You don't have to be prepared for the whole infancy on day one, just the first few weeks. :)

DH and I went to BRU last week and it was SO overwhelming so I feel your pain 100%!! A friend of mine is about to give birth and her friend made a spreadsheet of things you need for a baby, and she told me yesterday she would sent it to me. Hopefully that will help.

I have been very fortunate! Due to the way my family functions, I've pretty much raised children all my life and know what I need. I'm the oldest cousin on my Mum's side by 3yrs, so I used to take care of my cousins starting when I was rather young. Add in lots of nieces and nephews... It's fairly old-hat for me. However, DH is COMPLETELY lost and just kind of looks at me in massive confusion most of the time when we look at baby items or I talk about things to expect. I think had it not been for my experiences and love for taking care of babies and children (especially since I worried I'd not be able to have my own) I'd be just as lost as he is. It's nice to know that there's plenty of information and research done out there to help most FTMs that are feeling overwhelmed. Good luck and just enjoy it!

When I registered for #1, I took my friend with me who just had her 2nd.  She was honest with me about what and how much I would need.  And she had me register for things I didn't think I'd need quite so early.  I recommend taking a recent mom with you.

Oh my goodness.  When DH and I registered for our first baby we had a terrible time, because he wasn't interested and I had no idea what to look for.  It is SO overwhelming.  I'd say go and register with a STM friend of yours and leave your SO at home!  Smile
