Not using sippy cup

DS will be a year old on the 27th and he's still not using a sippy cup. He can hold it, even put it in his mouth and very occasionally sucks, but generally he just plays with it. So we're still doing bottles needless to say. I have purchased about 5 different kinds of sippy cups hoping he would take to one well, but so far, it's mostly a no go. I feel like he's behind in this area, though he is right on track with everything else. I should also mention he has never held his own bottle. Does anyone else's LO not use a sippy yet?

My DD is 10.5 months and has never held her own bottle. She would suck on the sippy cup but never tip it up so it was basically aa fail. I got her a straw sippy and it took several attempts but she can now do that like a pro since she doesnt have to tip it. I dipped it in yogurt to give her the idea to suck. Also, just yesterday my pedi told me that when I give her milk during the daynow to just always give it in the sippy. I asked what if she won't drink it and she told me not to worry since she still nurses morning and evening and she WILL get thirsty and drink it... I wasconcerned about it but she said it's better to do it now than wait and it won't take long she will get used to it. And believe it or not she drank out of the sippy all day yesterday and today. Also, I should also add your DS is not behind and don't worry about it too Much. Sometimes we get caught up in this stuff but theyre sstill babies, he will be drinking from a real cup before you know it!

Thanks. Just last night I was thinking that I should try to start giving him his formula in a sippy. He hasn't nursed since 4 months old but I guess you're right if he gets thirsty, he will drink.

DS had the same problem.  He'd rather chew on the spout than drink from it.  We discovered, however, that he had no problem using a straw.  So we went straight to the straw cup.  I had to search for one without a spill-proof valve though as DS couldn't figure out how to squeeze on the straw to open the valve.  Maybe if he's not figuring out the sippy, a regular cup and straw might work.

Another straw user here. She never got the tilt on regular sippees and so we tried the Playtex training straw cup. You squeeze the cup and it propels the water through the straw. She will still drink water from those cups, but she prefers the Munchkin click lock insulated straw cup for milk. I think the squeeze one gave the milk too fast since she can now accidentally squeeze it herself. We never switched to faster nipples so she is used to slower milk.

Beware of cups with strong spill proofing. Both the Nuby and the Tommee Tippee straws are too strong for her. She can't get the liquid and it makes her freak. Luckily the TT was a friends. I cut the valve out of the Nuby with an xacto knife so I can at least use it as a backup. :

My DD is using a sippy but will only have water. If I put formula in it, she gags and throws it. So for now she just gets water in it.

And actually a sippy is really not a big deal. Even if your LO skips it all together you may just have less problems getting him weaned from it later on;). I'm already giving DD some water also out of a regular cup, too. As in straight from the cup. A lot of things are sold for babies and some of them are very common and standard but it doesn't mean that all babies need to use them or that they are behind in any shape or form. Your boy is doing just fine :)

Oh and my DD doesn't hold her bottle. She actually can (and so does your DS I'm sure) but she just doesn't want to. She likes to be cuddled up on me, play with my hand and drink her formula. No harm in that :)

Mine uses the sippy when we help hold it, even though she manages fine with bottles on her own. I've been showing her straws regular ones that I dip in water and I've let her practice with an open cup that I hold. Bathroom disposable cups are great for her to practice with.

I try to save open cup practice for meal times when I'm going to change her soon anyways. Oh and we have a few plastic bibs with crumb pockets which help with some of the water.
