travel system for baby wearing mamas

I'm a ftm and have a question for all you baby wearing mamas!  Our lo is due March 27 and I plan to wear him as much as possible.  That being said, is it still worth it to get the infant carseat that snaps into a stroller?  Will there be times I want to just carry him in the carseat rather than wear him?  Or should I just skip the infant seat and invest in a convertible carseat instead?

We got a travel system. I used it one time, and only because we were going to Joann Fabrics and he fell asleep in the car on the way there- I would've woken him up if I took him out. I wish we had just gotten a convertible- at 6 months, he has outgrown his infant seat.

Take this with a grain of salt because I didn't baby wear a lot with DS because he didn't like my carrier until he was much older.  However we used the infant car seat quit a bit because he always fell asleep in the car.  So my unhelpful answer is that it depends on the baby.

I wore LO the most when she was very  small and I still enjoyed having the option of the travel system.

We bought a new infant carseat and plan to buy a sit and stand double stroller that allows us to snap in the carseat. (We have a regular single stroller that may work also.) I don't know that we used the travel system a ton, but we've loved the single stroller we bought, and I find the infant carseat invaluable. I didn't really know about baby wearing with DD1, and DD2 hated to be worn. Either way, in the winter months I find it much easier to carry baby in and out of stores/restaurants/church/etc in the infant seat than to bundle them up and then unbundle them for the carseat. It's also great so you don't have to wake a sleeping baby. I'm planning to buy a ring sling for DD3, and hopefully I will have better luck with that than the moby.

We loved having the carseat.  DS never slept so if I could avoid waking him up to put him in a carrier I did.  Could you borrow one from a friend who doesn't need theirs right now?  They aren't used for a long time but we loved having it.

I think it depends on the baby, but for my LO, I really liked having my infant carseat and a stroller to put it in (but a snap n go is probably just as good as a travel system stroller, which you probably don't need).  The reason is that my baby likes to fall asleep in the car...and you cannot transfer her without destroying the nap and creating a fuss-face for the next few hours until she takes another nap.  SO not having to wake the baby but not having to sit in the car while she naps has been important for us.  Some babies, apparently, can be transferred, or will go back to sleep easily...mine is not one of them.

I'm terrified of swtiching to a convertible, actually. Then I can't just bring her in when she falls asleep in the car...

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer for this.  Personally, I hated the bucket seat and never took it out of the car.  My kids didn't like it either and were much happier in the car once we switched to a rear facing convertible..  If they fell asleep in the car, they fell right back asleep in the carrier and vice versa.  I also never use a stroller except for running though - not that they are bad, just my preference.

It's also worth noting that carseats should never be used for extended periods of time outside of the car.  There's peer reviewed research that demonstrates babies O2 levels can drop when in the car seat, particularly for newborns and fragile infants - one reason babies must pass a car seat test before leaving the NICU.

Another point to consider is the climate where you live. I know where I live March is still winter so if I'm taking baby grocery shopping I'm not going to want to take them out of the carseat, into the store, undress from the snowsuit (and me from my coat), and then put the baby in the carrier. And repeat in opposite order to leave the store! Obviously you can make it work but the car seat is way more convenient for some things in the winter!

My son hated being in the carseat, so we rarely used it.  He wouldn't sleep in it, and if he did by some miracle fall asleep, he would wake up as soon as the car stopped.  So we wore him almost all the time for the first 6 months.

However, that being said, I would still get the infant seat over the convertible - it's safer for little babies.  I wouldn't invest in a travel system for the stroller.  We got the baby jogger city elite from the start, which reclines fully if you want to put an infant in it, but by the time he would let us put him in the stroller we didn't need to use the carseat.

I would the infant seat as your car seat and to geta stroller that it will work with.

You don't know at this point which one your baby will like.  Some babies hate "the bucket". Some (like mine) love them. Some babies hate being worn, others love it.

The bottom line is that I think that you have to adapt to your baby.  Try to keep your expectations in check (with regards to babywearing etc.) and roll with the baby you have.  It makes life much happier for everyone.

Thanks ladies for all the advice!  I think we'll go forward with the infant seat to keep our options open :)
