Up for discussion tonight...

Do you think that there is an increase in shootings right now because of the whole Mayan calendar thing?

There has been more information unearthed this year that shows the Mayans continued their calendar after the 12/21/2012 date.

It has nothing to do with the Mayan calendar.

Life will go on after 12/21/2012.

I don't think that has anything to do with it. Unfortunately this is gonna be a P&R cuz I am going to my sister's to watch Elf (yay!). I came across this article (below) on facebook and thought it made great points, not just the "we need gun control" crap they keep saying over and over.

Wow. It is amazing to me, just how hard is for parents to get help with their mentally ill children who show violent tendencies. I don't think jail is the answer for a child/teen who haven't committed a crime; but geez, do you really have to wait for a crime to be committed to have some action taken?

As far as the Mayan calendar connection, I don't think it has anything to do with the shootings & whatnot.

I just wanted to throw out there that I am honestly quite nervous to go to work tomorrow. My first graders are just like the victims in the shooting. I almost start to cry every time I see a picture on Facebook of a victim because they remind me so much of my kiddos. I know they will ask me questions and I don't know how prepared I will be to answer them.

I read this article yesterday, it was very well written. I think it has less to do with control because there have been shootings in states with strict gun laws and states with lax gun laws (like what happened in my state). In my opinion, it's a combination of two things. We have been incredibly desensitized to violence through video games (Call of Duty ring a bell?) and images we see in movies and on TV. They have glorified someone taking an assault rifle to kill anyone in their path.

The second thing is the lack of access to mental health care. My 20 year old cousin has Asperger's and sees a psychiatrist on a regular basis. He is lucky for this. My aunt told me yesterday that his psychiatrist turns away an average of 30 families a week. He cannot possibly treat and care for the demand he has received. The "change" I would love to see is having more access to mental health care for those who really cannot afford or those who are constantly turned away by these professionals.

Sorry this became so long, I needed to rant.

I saw this article the other day.... and while it breaks my heart a part of me gets angry reading it. I really feel for the mother in this situation... but if you are to the point where you have to have safety drills with your other children in the event your mentally ill child goes on a rampage and hurts you or your family, it's time to take serious action.

Not ALL mentally ill children go to prison... many adults end up there. Which is exactly why this mother SHOULD press charges when this happens. This child has a much better chance of getting help if it's court mandated, however messed up people think that is it's the truth of the current system. Once he turns 18, that help will be over with and he WILL end up in jail. Or killing someone-- or a school full of people. Having worked for the police department, I saw many children in similar positions get help this way.... but if the parents are so gung-ho on "protecting" their child from the system, they won't get the help.

It would be the hardest thing ever, but as a parent one of your most basic, but biggest, responsibilities is to keep your children safe. It would kill me inside, but my child would be a ward of the state before I allowed it to get to the point where he could seriously hurt or kill my other children.

I know it seems like I am unsympathetic, and that certainly isn't the case... it's just that I have seen this time and time again and this situation was entirely preventable. I'm not one on pushing gun control in this instance, particularly legislative action, but when a mother knows her child is violent (and has possibly been in fear from her life) she has no business having guns in her home. I know he is the one responsible for the shooting, and unfortunately she was killed as well.... but I am quite angry at the mother at the moment for having those guns. If she was alive, she would likely be criminally charged for her "involvement".

I'm gonna stop cuz I'm not going off on a tangent, but I think you get the basic point of my post.

Correlation =/=  Causation

The jury is still out on if violent video games CAUSE violence or if violent people just happen to gravitate to violent video games. I've looked at the research a lot for work purposes and I personally believe that violent video games likely increase aggression in the moment of play, but that they can't make an otherwise calm, sane person suddenly want to commit mass murder.

People talking about the mayan calendar thing just makes me so mad! Even when its joking about it. My dad is having an 'end of the world party'. I am seriously considering not going, other than  its our christmas party with my family.
