Any smokers or people who have quit?

I smoked for 13 years before getting pregnant with DS.  The day I got my BFP, I quit cold turkey.  I didn't smoke for 3.5 years and during that time we had DD.  A year ago, I started smoking again.  I know I will quit again when I get a BFP, but I'm having a hard time trying to quit now.  Just wondering if there's anyone else out there who's going through the same thing...

I don't smoke traditional cigarettes anymore. I use an electronic cigarette. I am using it to slowly reduce my nicotine intake. I still get the feeling of smoking and the nicotine. There is just no carcinogenic effects.
If you want more info, you can PM me.

I smoked for 14 years. I always knew I wanted to quit before I got pregnant. I didn't want to take away the excitement of pregnancy w/ the stress and urges I got when I tried quiting, or the risk I wouldn't actually succeed. When DH and I decided we were going to start TTC and I was working my doctors to get me ready (Thyroid stuff) I quit cold turkey, it has been over 2 years. I am so glad I am so far removed from it that it is no longer an issue for me. Good Luck! You have been there before, so you know how hard yet rewarding it is.

ETA: My trick was to eat an orange when I was getting a craving. It keeps your hands busy while taking care of your oral fixation and the amount of time it takes to peel and eat an orange is usually the time it takes for my craving to start to go away.

Me Dx: Weak Ovulation / Total Thyroid Removal
DH Dx: Mild MFI (borderline all 3), Varicocele

I used to smoke a pack a day for 12 years, I have been slowly quitting.  I just cut myself back, so far I am not 100% smoke free, but I am getting there.  When I got my BFP 5 years ago, I was able to quit, but when I miscarried, I went right back to smoking, so I know I can fully quit if I get that BFP, and going to my first RE appointment on friday, is also helping me quit now.

I have the electronic cigarette, but it doesn't fully satisfy that craving.  I have been using the Life Savers Pep-O-Mint mints to help, when I get a craving for a cigarette, I get one of those instead.  Everyone is different though, what worked for one person to quit, might not work for you, you gotta find what works for you.

I quit about three years ago, I used the patch. I think I tried quitting about 5-6 times before giving it up for good. I tried to quit using the gum 1-2 times, which was nice because you can just grab a piece of gum any time you feel like you'd be taking a smoke break. I eventually went back to smoking, but later tried the patch. I liked it because it's a steady release of nicotine-- you start off with the strongest one and gradually decrease the amount (I think every 2 weeks? Might have been longer but I think I switched every two weeks anyway.) Good luck!

I quit 3 years ago. I had been cutting back trying to quit anyway and then I got really sick and didn't want to stand outside in the cold to smoke so I forced myself to quit when I was already feeling miserable anyway. After a few months of quitting completely I went back to socially smoking if I'm out drinking but that is a very rare thing.

Quitting smoking is hard.  I tried quitting cold turkey so many times, but could never do it.  What ended up working for me is cutting down gradually.  I started by only smoking 10 cigarettes a day and did that for a few weeks, then I went down to 5, then down to 3, then 2, then 1.  It was still really hard to go from 1 to 0.

I tried chewing nicotine gum, but it was really gross.  I found that regular gum and candy helped the most to get through a craving.   I also try to avoid things that will trigger a craving.  You've quit before so try to stay positive, you can do it again.

I smoked until I found out I was pregnant with DD and quit cold turkey just like you and haven't went back.  January 24th will be 7 years.  You can do it but once you stop this time, don't go back.  Just say no.

I smoked about a pack and a half a day for 3-4 years, and quit almost 3 years ago.  I used Chantix and swear by it, but I would definitely research the effects of the drug on TTC/pregnancy before trying it - you have to get a script from an MD anyway, so something you could disucss with your doctor.  It has some scary side effects, but none of them hit me, so I was a huge fan of it.

I would encourage everyone to quit before you get a bfp. When I got my first bfp, I quit right away, but it was so hard. I couldn't enjoy my pregnancy. Then when I had a miscarriage I blamed myself because I had wanted a cigarette so bad and now I could have one. Also, smoking increases the chances of ectopic pregnancy. The second bfp, I quit on CD 1 and maybe that had something to do with my success. Good luck!
