Baby naming woes

So DH and I have embarked upon the Herculean task of naming our new little boy.  For some reason I always seem to start out thinking how much fun this is going to be.  Well, it wasn't with DD and it's not looking any better with this kid either. DH and I each make a list of names we like, then we look to see if we have any in common.  We then run each other's list by each other and scratch off ones we absolutely hate, and circle ones we really like.

I want him to have a cool guy name - i.e., Luke, Asher, Chase, Beckett.  Those are cool names to me.  At the very least, I don't want him to get teased for his name.

Meanwhile, here's DH putting out names like:  Ermin.  Amos.  Puck.  I asked him, "Do you want him to have a 'kick me' sign permanently attached to his back?"  I'm surprised he hasn't suggested Erkyl as a possibility yet!

We had one name in common on our lists - Asher.  I have a feeling this will go exactly the way it did with DD, where we default to one name we can both agree on.  Now I do love my daughter's name, so it worked out OK, but the process was horrific!

Anyone else going though this?  It can't be just us. :)

Melissa

We worked on it for 13 years so we had more planning time than most.  For our boy name, we picked the perfect name.  DH's oler sister found out and named her dog that name so we could not use it.  We then picked another name and my closest friend started dating a guy with that name.  There was only one girl name that DH and I both liked and he could pronounce so we went with that.  It was a super painful process but I love the name.

Well, Asher is a perfectly nice name. :-)

While we were TTC but before we even got the BFP, my DH one day said out of the blue, "You know what would be a nice name for a boy? Daniel." And I said, "Sounds good, I like it." We have no major associations with the name, but it fits all of our criteria. And it's still our top choice.

My DOGS, on the other hand...now THAT was a torturous process. I think we had 40 possible names for Dog #1.

DH and I have one top candidate for a name that we keep going back to and I think for him it's pretty much a done deal but I still want to keep thinking about it in case something else all the sudden hits me in the heart.. I've found the worst thing I can do is tell other people what we're considering because everyone's tastes are so different.

My best friend keeps calling me with names, but in my opinion they're all HORRIBLE, and then she'll tell me the name we picked out is just fine, but I know she doesn't really feel that way. lol. My new tactic is I'm just telling people we're not deciding until the babies born. Its way more difficult than I ever thought it would be!!!

It's tough. I have long been fascinated by the social science of baby names and have read tons of books and articles on the subject.

DH is a boy so he's well, less interested. So far we've had some casual conversations about it. Most of the names he has come up with I don't like. Except for one girl's name - Amelia - which I was strangely drawn to. But then he looked it up and found one of the potential meanings is birth defect, and he's now nixed it. And I still can't stop thinking about it!

We're planning to use the sports playoff method to narrow our choices down. Pick at least 16 names and then pair them off against each other as if they were playing a game. Then use certain criteria to decide which name wins - likeability, popularity, sound with our last name, etc. We haven't started this yet since I'm only eight weeks, but I've been secretly writing down baby names and making lists.

I am decidedly more excited about it than DH is though.

This!  I think it's a good idea to keep the name to yourself if you can.  With DD we kept her name (Brynn) a secret from almost everyone, including our families, until after she was born.  I knew my parents wouldn't like it, for one thing.  People will say anything before the baby is here, but once they're here, they tend to keep their opinions to themselves!  LOL.  I think we will probably do the same with this next one.

My EDD is Thursday - we still don't have the baby named. We have one name neither of us has vetoed, still not the "THAT'S IT" name I was hoping for. I'm betting that is what he'll end up with. Our 2nd son got the default name too - I like it fine, just wasn't the "ah-ha" I was wanting.

Before I put in my 2 cents... can I ask.... what does DH, DS and DD mean?  In my mind they mean "darling husband", "darling son" and "darling daughter" ha ha!

As far as names.... I'm a big fan of illiterations if it's a boy.  For example... my little boy's name is Gavn Gibb.  Since boys have their surname for their whole lives... I think it's cute to have their first name start with the same letter :)  That's just me :)

Also.... I guess I'm weird... because I used to work with children and saw a lot of names used over and over that were so-so.... but every once in a while a really interesting name would come my way like "Promise" or "Harbor".  Call me crazy... but I really like names like that.  Also... names that are teaming with meaning or are after a beloved family member are very important to me.

This child is going to be either Cady or Cody.  My husband's name is Cody... so the boy version is obvious and the girl version is just Cody with an "a" :)  Also Cody's mom's(who's no longer with us) mame was Katie :)

Good luck doll :)

I'm due any day now and we are JUST beginning to solidify top contenders. We've been in disagreement for this entire time. Hate just settling. Boy names are hardest.

You got it right on the DD, DH, and DS.  Sometimes DD is for dirty delete but we don't have many of those here.

Naming this baby is way harder than our first was! We have a short list but keep throwing additional names in. I'm only 85 sure this peanut will be Charlotte. To the previous OP, Brynn was on my list with our first and I've mentioned it again. Not sure that hubby is on board though.
