I hate my OB but have no options

We moved between last pregnancy and this one to a city that has barely any VBAC options. The OB I'm seeing now is fine, at best, and her office staff is awful. There is one other OB in town that does VBACs but her office staff has even worse reviews online this this one does. I had a midwife with DD#1 and there was so much education along the way, and this time there is zero education at all, no discussion, if I ask questions I feel like the OB gets snippy. Thank goodness I've done this before because the OB has never even had a conversation with me about diet, weight gain goals, milestones, etc...Not one. With the midwife she treated the moment we would hear the heartbeat for the first time very reverently and today the OB just matter of factly gets the doppler out, no discussion, no questions, no acknowledgement, finds the heartbeat for 5 seconds and that's it. Everytime I leave the office I want to cry but I am literally stuck if  want a VBAC. The only concolation I have is the hospital where I will be delivering is very natural friendly with great nurses, so at least I will have that and the OB won't be around that much to ruin in, haha! Thanks for reading my rant...

I'm sorry you don't like your OB.  I might visit the other OB just to see what you think.  Online reviews aren't always accurate.

Are there any midwives around that deliver in the hospital or in home?  Is home birth an option?  Any birthing centers?

Is there a mid wife that would be willing to do a home birth with you? I am sorry you have a crummy OB that makes it tougher. :(

Ditto Botanical, I'd try to visit the other OB. Her office staff might have bad reviews, but her office staff isn't going to be delivering your child. It could very well be worth it to have frustrating bureaucracy for a few months in order to have an OB who you are more comfortable with.

Sadly, there are midwives in town (TWO!) and they don't accept VBAC patients. I've called there like three times checking in to see if they've changed their policy in the last 2 weeks, haha. I might HAVE to call a third OB anyways because it turns out that my OB is going to be on vacation right at my due date for several days, at a wedding in Jamaica- and the bride is the other OB who does VBACS! So there will be NO OBs in my city who perform VBACS on a regular basis for like, 4 days. Awesome. Anyways, at my next appt I am going to confirm one more time who the back-up OB is ( I still don't know, she said she would secure someone), and I might just hightail it over there. Argh.

I feel for you! I'm in the same situation except I'm a FTM and I was sure my doctors should be educating me better. I'm getting all my education from the internet and books. But like you there's nothing I can do about it unless I travel an hour and half away. I would then have to travel that far when in labor and that thought scares me, so I am putting up with the crappy care I'm getting.

I think, you know what your real goal is, VBAC, so maybe visit the other OB and see if it's a better fit, but if not you can handle short curt vsits with your ob for the rest of your pregnancy. It sounds like you are fortunate that you've done this before and you are taking control of your education. Check our ICAN and see if there are any other VBACers in your area you can connect with, find a great douls and have faith in yourself.

Please forgive my typos! I'm not as dumb as my iphone would like you to believe :)

FWIW, I love my OB and he never had any of these conversations with me. If I had a question, I asked him or his nurse, but I learned pretty much everything I needed to know from books and online sources. He is very laid back and only brings up problems if they actually become problems.

If you aren't comfortable with this OB, check out the other one and then make a decision.

Any chance of a home or birth center birth? I know a lot of midwives who are supportive of VBACs and do out of hospital births. It might be something to look into!

Same here. We've never had a conversation about any of those things. She always asks me if I have questions, and I can never think of anything. I did have some good conversations with my OB about attempting a vbac when I was pg with DD2. The other stuff really isn't that important. I asked my OB once about weight gain, and she just told me that the more you gain while pg, the more you have to lose later. (Granted, all my vitals are always fine, low blood pressure, not gestational diabetes, etc.)

I don't think it could hurt to meet with the other OB and see if you have a better connection with her.
