4 am wakings

My LO is getting better at sleeping through the night, but sometimes that means he wakes up at 4 am.  Is there any way to encourage him to go back to sleep, or do I just need to accept this early waking (which is what I have been doing)? My DH put some toys in his crib the last time this happened and he played a little by himself until I came to get him around 5 am. Is this normal? Any advice or experience with this sort of thing? I'm not even sure toys are allowed in the crib at this point; I always thought we were not supposed to put anything in there.

My little guy does the same thing.  I have this turtle nightlight that casts the constellations on the wall.  I turn it on.  I also make sure to give him a diaper change and make sure he's warm.

An early wake-up is often a sign of overtiredness from a too-late bedtime or too much awake time during the day.  Have you tried moving bedtime 20 minutes earlier or shortening time awake during the day?

 If you're sure it's not a schedule issue then it may be developmental.

My LO has been waking up earlier than usual the last couple weeks. I have found that if I don't go in there, he'll mess around a bit then go back to sleep. It seems to be the same exact time every morning like he's hiding a little alarm clock in his crib! I chalk it up to being a phase and figure this schedule will change again at some point.

This might just be me but I heard that babies/children shouldn't play in their crib because then they don't associate it with sleep anymore....??

I We do this too, and if she wakes she eventually falls back to sleep. Our house rule is the day doesn't start until 6:30, so barring a serious problem, we don't get her up before then. She has her lovie in with her, and recently H put a small owl in her crib too. I don't like too many toys as it can keep them awake to play, but she usually finds her lovie, a paci, talks a bit then goes back to sleep.

Update:  Last night I did a few things differently... I started his bedtime wind-down a half hour earlier and made the room really dark - much darker than I had been doing.  I have read (including from post above) that an earlier bedtime sometimes is the answer.  I have also read that melatonin, which the body makes naturally for sleep, needs darkness.  I also made sure the room was a bit warmer, since I think he was a little cold the last morning when I got him.  He slept through the night, from 6:50 pm to 5:20 am, to be exact.  I think that's pretty good...?  (I didn't put any toys in the crib.)

Yep, earlier the better. Being overly tired makes them wired and they sleep less and wake up earlier. It's weird how that works! Best piece of info a parent could have!
