Hello & ? about 17P

Good evening, ladies. :-) I'm not in 3rd tri just yet, but will be soon! I'm looking for anyone who has been getting 17P shots - I have a question for you.

I'm 10 shots in, 10 to go! The only problem is that they're starting to hurt like a mo-fo. They've always itched like mad, but never hurt this much. I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with them and if it continues to get worse. Thanks!

I'm sorry they hurt and itch.  Mine don't hurt at all, with the exception of the site being sore and maybe a tiny bit bruised sometimes.

Did you have lots of contrax last time?  How are the shots working for you otherwise?

I have 8 left and dealt with a lot of itching too but I would say pain.  The spot does get sore but I found that if the person giving it injects it really slow I don't get sore or itchy.. Some nurses put it in fast like they are doing me a favor but I end up with a welt for days

Yeah, slow is definitely better since it's so thick.

The shots are working thus far, but I'm getting them because my son came early due to PTL (quick onset with rupture). It was scary and I can only hope moment to moment that it'll keep working until at least 37 weeks! :)

So in the grand scheme of things, the pain is not a big deal, just wondering what others were experiencing. I keep hearing that the itching is normal....which is super fun. ;-)

I was the same, I pPROMd at 33w5d and had her 12 hours later.  I saw a different ob for my last appt and he said that since I didn't have lots of contrax last time that the 17p isn't as necessary.  Great, thanks.

My ob put me on the vaginal suppository form, I wonder if you could switch to that if it is getting really uncomfortable. According to the MFM the efficacy is the same.

Is 17p the same as progesterone? If so, I was getting those weekly and what helped immensely was rubbing the injection site really good immediately after the injection. Rub deep and circular. It will hurt while you rub it, but afterwards it won't hurt at all. I found it to be way better than not rubbing and ending up with a sore butt for a week.

Also the location of the injection makes a difference as well. My nurse switched to a higher part of my butt, rather than right on the cheek and that helped too.

Good luck!

This is what my nurse does too. When I had someone else do it I ended up with a knot for the whole week.

This is where I've always gotten my shots. Maybe they're starting to hit the same spots or something. :-/ I'll have to try the rubbing thing - that might help.

My husband gives mine and he got really good training on how to do it.  I had a couple of EXTREMELY painful red welts the first two times because we injected too close to the bone part of the back of my hip/butt.  You have to get into the really fatty part of your butt, if you have any (I have plenty).  We use the z track method (great youtube video) and I warm the oil between my boobs before he injects it VERY slowly (1-2 minutes, no joke).  I haven't had any pain since.  The warming really helps liquify it a little better.  I took it in my last pg = 0 contractions!  So far so good this time and I think we have 9 shots left (through 36w, if I make it that far!).
