Hospital/DR. question...

Do you have to deliver at a hospital that your doctor works with? Cuz the chances of my doctor actually delivering me are slim anyway, since they rotate on call in my office. There is a hospital that offers water birth, but my doctor doesn't deliver there. It is the ONLY hospital in my city that offers this and the more I research the more important it becomes to me. I don't have a 'bad' relationship with my doctor so I don't have any 'reason' to leave the practice other than where I want to deliver. I'll be asking at my appointment in 2 weeks, but its been eating at me and I was just wondering if anybody else had experience with this!  TIA ladies!

Personally, I think you should be seeing a doctor or practice of docs (or midwives) at the hospital where you want to deliver. If something does go wrong, you want them to have your entire file of info. If you just show up at the other hospital in labor, of course they will treat you, but they will have no idea what your prenatal care looked like. (how was your blood pressure? any signs of pre-e, gestational diabetes, GBS status?)

My personal opinion is that wanting to deliver at a different hospital is a valid reason to switch doctors.

If you want your doc to deliver, then you have to be at a hospital where they have "privileges." If you really want a particular hospital, you should switch docs. If you explain your intentions to your current doc maybe s/he can recommend someone who has privileges at the hospital you want.

Ditto PP. If you want to deliver at this other hospital, you should find a provider who has privileges to deliver at that hospital.

If you were to show up at the other hospital, without any proof of pre-natal care, you will be treated as such. Meaning, you'll likely be subject to an IV, IV fluids, IV antibiotics, continuous monitoring, etc. It's also possible that this other hospital and their providers don't take your insurance. Birth is expensive in the hospital, so make sure that your insurance is accepted first.
