Question about Provera

I had my annual last Thursday, which was great timing due to this weird cycle I'm having (currently on CD 49). When I told my OB that I haven't had my period since Halloween and we were TTC, she ordered bloodwork to check my thyroid and hormone levels, as well as HCG to 100% confirm that I wasn't pregnant. I was fine with that, since my temps have been on the low side, and I'm always cold and tired, so I've been wondering in the back of my head if I had any thyroid issues. Anyway, the bw came back fine, so at least my mind is at rest about that. She also brought up Provera. She wasn't pushy about it and said that I could just wait a little longer to see if I get my period or take it now for 5 days to bring on AF. I know the general rule is to wait 60 days before contacting your doc, but I had a good opportunity to talk to her about this at my annual. From all the info I'm gotten from this board, my inclination is to wait a bit longer and continue temping to see if I do O before going the Provera route, but is there any harm in going ahead and taking it before 60 days as my dr is prescribing? I know there are a number of ladies on here with much longer cycles than me who are waiting it out but just wondering what the cons of ending the cycle now would be, if any.

I guess it depends on what your cycle is usually like.  If they are typically 80+ days without intervention I don't see any harm in taking it before 60.  However if this is just a wonky cycle, you might want to wait the 11 more days just to see.

I realize my story is probably not super common, but I was seeing an RE and she wanted to see if upping my metformin would make me O ( I wasn't Oing at all on my own).  I went to see her around CD28 and she said if I don't get my period in three more days, call for provera (yes it was well before 60, but like I said I never O'd on my own so if I didn't O by then by upping my meds, chances were I wasn't going to).

The day I called for provera, I decided for whatever reason to take an OPK.  I did, it was positive, I O'd on CD34 and got pregnant.  Obviously you can't wait for forever to see if you'll O and I think it was a miracle that I caught it right before taking provera, but like I said you could still O if this is just a wonky cycle...just my two cents.

I personally would wait the 60 days to start taking the Provera. Like PP mentioned (as well as others who have posted before about Oing late), you do still have a chance to O this cycle.  48 days is not too long in the broad scheme of things and the cycle can still end naturally at that time (even though it's out of your personal norm) which is why they say wait the 2 months. I assume that you would have waited until 60 days to talk with the OB about jump-starting your cycle if your annual hadn't happened to fall during this time, correct?

I don't think you mentioned if you've taken Provera before. If not, you don't know how you'll react.  Side effects for me weren't too bad (headaches, moody, acne, hot flashes, sore boobs) but they are for some people so, just IMHO, I wouldn't take it if you don't have to.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, if I hadn't had my annual I would've waited the 60 days to contact her, thanks to the advice I got on here. I will just hold out till day 60 or so and hope that I'll O sometime in the next week or two.

And this is a pretty amazing story, btw!
