How do you know how big your baby is?

Does everyone get a growth US or is that something they only do if the doc thinks there is a growth issue?

People on here are saying things like "oh, well I am carrying a ____ pounder or my baby is measuring in the ____th precentile" and I want to know how everyone seems to know this!  I had my anatomy US way back when and at that time baby was in the 40th percentile, but that was forever ago and did not tell me how much they think she weighs now.

Just curious because I wish I knew how big she is!

Some doc do growth U/S's. Some of them are routine, others are due to concerns. However, most of them are completely wrong. The U/S's can be off by 2 pounds either way. Hence why they are completely stupid unless they think your kid has growth restriction.

First because of my previa & then my GD I have been having u/s every 4 weeks since around 9-10 weeks. So the last few have just been about the GD where they check to make sure everything is growing & right & the placenta is okay & they check on an approx weight. My last one was Monday. I found out my kid is around 7lb 11oz or 60%. If I didn't have GD issues (or other high risk issues) I wouldn't have to get the u/s and wouldn't know until he was born!

My doctor does a routine 36 week ultrasound, they're kind of silly just because they aren't always very accurate and it's actually difficult to get "cute" photos of them when they're so big and squished in there. They told me she was measuring 6 pounds 4 ounces [at almost 37 weeks] but no other details.

Oh ok good I was so confused about how I was supposed to know how big she is (feeling like a neglectful mother already, ha!).

That being said, it would be nice to have an idea of her weight.  Yeah, I know they are very nonspecific and often wrong but knowing that she is not a supergiant would be nice to know.

The short answer to your question is...."give birth."  Lol, honestly 3rd tri U/S can be so off, you have to take them with a grain of salt. I only had 1 U/S with my 1st and only 1 this time (was @ 19 weeks) because MW sees no need to have more.  Good thing because I don't want to pay for it.  (My insurance sucks.) I am quite petite and had a good size baby - 8 lbs 6 oz at 40 weeks, 2 days. If I were to guess before he was born, I would have guessed around the 7 lb mark.  This time, I'm going to guess this baby will be around the same weight as DS was if I go the full 40 weeks or later.

My doctor has never mentioned how big they "think" baby is to me. I'm sort of glad since I hear their estimates can be off by 2 pounds either way! I know that I my stomach has measured 1 to 2 weeks ahead since about 28 weeks but I don't believe that has any real weight either on how large or small the baby is.

This, especially the part about them being waaaaay off. Go read some of the stories the GD moms post. A lot were told the baby was 9-10+ lbs and really baby was 7-8 lbs or less! I wasn't give a percentile at my 30 week u/s but was told baby was about 4.2 lbs. We'll see what they say next week. But I know at my weekly fluid check that baby has a huge belly, there's no denying that...

My doctor did an ultrasound around 36 weeks (with my 1st) to check position and size so that we knew what was going on in there before delivery.  This is not routine for many doctors, though.  This time I am being monitored for something so I am having ultrasounds every 6 weeks so they usually update me on size then (2 lbs 7 oz at 26 weeks which was 65th%).  It all depends on your doctor's protocol.

I have growth ultrasounds every 2 weeks because baby is so small, less than 8 th percentile. If she drops off her growth curve they will take her early.

I know you hear more often than not those u/s are off but with my DS it was spot on. At 38 wk he weighed 10#3oz. He was born 39w5d and was 11#.

With this baby I have diagnosed GD (I think somehow with DS it went undetected) and my u/s at 34w3d she was 40th percentile and 5lb4oz. With my history of u/s I'm taking that for face value!!

I asked my OB if I could have another u/s and she let me. That was at 32 or 33 weeks and they said she was 3lbs5oz or something like that and in the 24th percentile.

Now I just worry she is too small, but my dr even said to take the measurements w a grain of salt. DS was 9lbs5oz when he was born, so I was expecting her to be on the bigger side, but doesn't look like she will be anywhere close to that.

I think you really can't know unless you have an ultrasound - and even then it's not for sure.

I had one last week due to growth restriction in my first pregnancy.  I'll have another at 36 weeks.

That's how mine measured too. His legs were normal-ish, head was big, belly was very big.

The weight was pretty close, but I was prepared for a short chubby baby. To this day I have a tall skinny kid.
