Hydrocodone...safe?

I went to the ER today for some cramping, and spotting. Left the ER, and not even 2 or 3 minutes later I was involved in an accident (some lovely gem slammed into the side of my car...gotta love roundabouts). I went back to the ER where they prescribed my hydrocodone for my neck pain.

I'm really nervous about taking any medicine while pregnant, especially pain meds. I'm almost tempted to just take some Tylenol PM so I can just take a nap, and hopefully just rest.

I'm on my phone and can't find anything on what class of drug it is. The only thing that seems to come up is what it does, and what kind of drug it is.

Its a narcotic (Vicodin is the common name). If you need pain relievers ask your OB what they recommend. Livestrong had this and their sources are good.

This. It sounds like they gave it to you to help prevent swelling. I would just ice the neck instead. 15 minutes on and 20 minutes off. If it's still stiff the next day maybe make an appointment with a chiropractor.

Thank you! I hate pain medication in general. I think I'm just going to take some Tylenol PM, and sleep it off if I can.

Absolutely not!!! I take oxycodone for my back but all of that had to cease when I started TTC. The pain sucks but I would rather deal with the pain to make sure I have a healthy baby.

My OB prescribed hydrocodone for my migraines, and it was safe throughout my pregnancy, and I have a healthy baby girl. I am assuming you notified the ER that you were pregnant? If so, take the advice of medical professionals over Internet strangers.

Hydrocodone (Vicodin) actually IS safe during pregnancy and I'm assuming you told the ER you were pregnant and that they're not just willy-nilly allowing you to put chemicals in your body that could effect your fetus.

Thank you!  It is safe up to the third trimester - at that point there is the risk of needing to wean after birth, which puts it in the class C category.  Otherwise, if only taken a here and there in pregnancy, it is typically considered 'okay' during the first two trimesters.

I've taked to my RE, Rhuemy, PCP, and to a high-risk OB and they are all okay with hydrocodone through the second trimester.  It doesn't contain NSAIDs, so there isn't that risk associated with Ibuprofen.  The only one that doesn't agree is my Pain Specialist, but he's against anything under Cat A during pregnancy.  Unfortunately, that's who I have my pain contract with so I will not be able to get an RX for it during pregnancy.

As long as you told the ER you're pregnant, you should be fine.  If you're weary, contact your OB or call the pharmacy - they should be able to give you information to ease your mind.

this exactly.  category c does not necessarily mean bad outcomes for the fetus - there are essentially no controlled trials of drugs in pregnant women because no one would sign up to be a part of them.  i am taking a category c drug during pregnancy, and took the same one last pregnancy with no problems.  ask your OB if you are concerned.  if you are not in severe pain, tylenol would be more benign.

I was on that for migraines during my pregnancyand it was a Rx from my OB. If you are concerned, call the OB on duty and let them know. If the ER knew you were pregnant though, I wouldn't worry a whole lot.
