NTTGPR- trying to kick a habit

Hey ladies,

I just have a question or looking for advice, hints, tips what have you. My vice is soda. I really want to quit this not only for TTC  but just to be healthier in general. There is always a study or report saying how bad it is for you. I don't really think I drink a lot. Maybe a can or a bottle ( vending machine size not the huge ones) day but I use to drink more when I was a bit younger. I've tried stopping but I can go maybe a week and half then I get those awful  withdrawals, headache, tired, cranky you know all those fun things. I do drink water but sometimes I just want something that isn't water and I love the fizzy bubblyness of soda. Anyone else deal with this? Do any of you possibly have tips on helping me quit? I am well aware what worked/didn't work might not be the same for me but I'm just looking for somewhere to start. Cold turkey isn't doing it. :(

Thanks!

If you like the bubbly-ness of soda, try Sparkling ICE.  It's in the water section at the grocery store. I believe costco and sams club both have it in bulk  It's a flavored sparkling water in a tall thin bottle.  It's delicious and satisfies that need/want for the carbonation.

OP I am in love with your wedding dress! :)

We stopped soda we only drink it if we are eating out. My Dh used to drink a ton. I notice I enjoy it more now that it is a treat. Maybe try adding something to your water lemon or lime? Some people really like sparkling water and you still get a little fizz (I am not a fan)

I was also going to suggest flavored sparkling water. I LOVE it so much more than just drinking regular water.

DH and I bought one of those Soda Stream machines and we have the all natural flavors for it, we don't use the ones to make soda, etc. Sometimes I just flavor it with fresh lemons, limes, cucumbers, etc.

I have the same vice. I don't drink coffee so coke is my caffeine for the day. I haven't cut it out completely yet (due to the headaches, etc..) but I have cutback significantly.

1. About every other week or so, I let myself have less. I started by going from a bottle (the little ones), to a can, now I am on fountain soda which has a ton of water. Since I can control how much of it to put into the cup, I am down to about half a cup at this point.

2. If I am in need of something fizzy I go for a sprite. It still isn't good for you, but won't contribute to the caffeine habit. Even with sprite, I'll only take a little bit to get the fizz.

3. I'm not a big fan of water, I literally have to force myself to drink it. Now that I don't drink much soda, I'm finding I add Vitamin Water Zero in with my water intake. I am someone who constantly needs to have a drink nearby, so if I have water and Vitamin Water around me, it keeps me away from the really bad stuff.

Good luck!

Lurking....

ICE has sucralose in it, which is an artificial sweetener. I checked recently as I am trying to avoid artificial sweeteners and soda.

OP, I have been drinking those V8 sparkling splash. They are good! I tried mineral water and couldn't get used to it.

I was going to say what ColeRose said and go the Sierra Mist Natural route. That'll help with the need for bubbles, but get you off of the caffeine.

I had a point where caffeine (even the "small" amount in soda) was making my anxiety crazy. I had to stop drinking caffeinated soda completely. Sprite or Sierra Mist were my go-to when I wanted something fizzy. That, and to up my water intake I put lemon in my water. I actually use crystallized lemon that's in little packets (it's 0 calories, literally just lemon) called True Lemon. I like the real lemony taste, so I put two in a normal bottle of water. Delish.

Good luck!

I love soda because of the fizziness, but sometimes when I'm trying to be healthier I'll have some sparkling water with a splash of 100% juice for flavor.  It *usually* is enough to ease my craving.

I cut out soda except for Sierra Mist Natural and the occasional Izzy or Orangina or something like that. Most of the "bad" things in soda are in the dark sodas, like colas, and in the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas. I do loosely count calories though, so I need to fit the soda into my daily allowance. That keeps me in check! Izzy makes a lighter version too, that isn't "diet" as it doesn't use artificial sweeteners; it is just less sweet and less flavored. In my opinion, it tastes watered down, but it's not bad.

Sometimes you just need something that's thirst quenching in a different way than water. I find coconut water to be great in those moments, and know lots of people who love it. It unfortunately does bad things to my stomach, but I think that is uncommon.

Thank you all for your suggestions and input. It is very much appreciated and I feel like I have a few options to try out! Hopefully one of these works out for me so I can continue to cut out soda or quit it all together. Again thanks ladies! Big Smile

I try to not drink dark sodas and stick to natural sodas like Hansens which doesn't have artificial dyes and such. It still has sugar, but it's cane sugar. It's not awesome for you, but it's a step in the right direction. Soda is definitely one of the most addictive things out there! Good luck! :)

My husband and I are trying for our first biological child together. :) We're on cycle number 3.

I'll second the ICE drinks and wave to the OP. We have the same wedding dress. Great minds think alike. I LOVED mine. The little pop of color was so fun.

Perrier helped me stop drinking soda.

I now have a soda stream and I just make unflavored soda water in it.

I am trying to get DH to kick the habit. I tried sparkling water but he likes some flavor. So what I do is I buy Dole 100% fruit juice (as close to natural as I will get). I fill a glass with sparkling water and just use a splash of fruit juice.

It's just enough flavor to keep him satisfied and much less crap than soda.

Once you quit soda, you will never go back! I did cold turkey about 3 years ago and now if I sip it I can't believe how bad it tastes. And I was a Diet Coke junkie! You can do it, OP!

I really like Polar brand flavored seltzers when I have the urge to drink something carbonated.  I really like the black cherry and raspberry lime flavors.  When I crave something sweet and carbonated I just add some fruit juice to it.
