Silly Changing table question

I will be a FTM and I just can't seem to wrap my head around why changing tables are all setup sideways...

I have never had a child so I can't say from experience but it just seems like it would be so much more comfortable or easier if you were able to turn the changing pad so it was facing you right?

I was looking for example at the IKEA Hemnes changing table topper that extends the top of the dresser underneath...

Any advice on this?

I have our's in a corner by the door in the nursery.  So I can change her straight on or from the side.

Never made sense to me either. My sister has her's that way and it works. But we went with a crib/changer combo and so baby faces us.

It's very simple. If the baby's butt is facing you, it's kind of like looking down the barrel of a gun. You're directly in the line of fire. And you do NOT want to be standing there when the kid has explosive diarrhea. Trust me. You're safer on the side.

EXACTLY.  It isn't that difficult to change a baby on the side.

So true. Plus if the baby faces the side you can pick up their feet with your left hand and wipe with your right.

I got mine in Austria for that exact reason (Italian changng tables are like in the US, sideways)

I find it very unconfortable to change a baby from the side and however, even if you're facing the butt you can stay a little to the right or left so you won't be in the direct "danger zone"

And, on the side you have more control of baby, to stop random rolling off the table, because you are essentially body blocking him.  much safer!
