Question about insurance

Any one know what will happen??

I have my own insurance and my husband has his. DD was put on husbands insurance the day she was boen (my mom does HR for his company). Dependents are not allowed on my insurance. We both have Blue Cross. Now I know under my insurance, the delivery will be payed. But what about the NICU stay? His or mine? Does the NICU stay count as part of the delivery? The hospital has both insurances on file, I made sure of that.

Why I ask is because I got an EOB from my insurance for my DDs NICU stay. Saying they paid it. Why would they pay it? She is not covered under my insurance. Unless it was a mistake? I called Blue Cross and customer service has no idea what is right. They said they will pay things because I have 30 days to add DD to my plan. Well, the EOB says the NICU stay was paid 45 days after birth. So that dosent make sense. She also said if it was a mistake and it get audited then they will ask for the money back. WTF?! They should know if it was a mistake.

My deductibles and max pay is higher on my insurance than my husbands. Thats why I am questioning it.

I know babies are covered under the mother's insurance for the 1st 30 days - meaning you wouldn't have to call right away to add them.

I thought the NICU portion would be paid by the policy your LO is on.  Is it possible that they may have mixed up the plans and billed yours instead of your H's since you have the same provider?  I would honestly call again and talk to them about it just to be sure, and don't be afraid to ask for someone higher up if things still aren't getting resolved.

What was the date of service on the EOB? If it was in the thirty days, even if the payment was made after the thirty days, it's probably right. I'd call again to be sure. Is there an insurance person in the hospital you could speak with?

I still do not know what is going on. DD NICU stay was 11/3-11/15. The EOB date was 12/17. So it was paid after the 30 days. My insurance should have seen that DD was never added. Unless they cover the service as an umbrella from the delivery? I tried to talk to the hospital but they had no idea either.

I don't necessarily have an answer to your question, but here's what happened for us: Our insurance changed 2 weeks after the girls were born. I added them to the first policy, and then everything rolled over to the new policy (different ins companies, too). The first company ended up paying everything for the birth and the NICU. The second insurance company paid nothing.

They said something about the first 30 days as well, but my girls were in the NICU for 83 days, way past the 30 day umbrella.

So, who knows, but I would expect that your insurance will cover everything for your DD, even if she's not on the policy.
