Curious...how many use replies here to help you decide?

I've posted my share of questions regarding my top names.  It seems of those who actually respond, in my case at least, it's often resulted in a 50/50 outcome leaving me just as confused as I began.

Curious how many of us actually use the responses to make our decision or in the end do we just decide completely on our own?

Obviously this is not a scientific study.

I think that the Bump provides a great sounding board, but I wouldn't let internet strangers dictate my ultimate name choices. Your kid, your pick. Besides, I've side eyed many, many of the suggestions during my time visiting BNB. But it's a terrific forum for getting opinions... and LOTS of 'em!

Lol this made me laugh because the one time I posted my top 3 choices, I got pretty decent responses but ended up picking everyone's least favorite name. Haha I was just happy to get honest feelings and had to decide if the "negatives" mattered that much to me. When it came to picking a middle name, I didn't even ask because I realized that, while I appreciate the opinions, it was my love for the name that mattered. :

I got a lot of mixed reviews on my son's name, and the majority of people who responded liked the other name we had in the running better. I really appreciated the reasoning and suggestions, rather than just 'dislike' or 'NMS' (Which is sometimes helpful, sometimes not), so I/we took those into account and weighed the pros and cons of the names. If the vast majority hated my name with valid reasonings (like, spelling it Gabreeyl), I'd probably reconsider, but if the people who responded just didn't care for it in general, I don't think it would sway me.

We're a long way from actually deciding yet, but I think it's useful for certain things. If I had 2 names and loved both of them, I can't imagine leaving it up to the BNB to decide. But I posted awhile ago about a name I love, but was considering crossing off the list because of a potential nickname; I got a lot of reassurance that I was overthinking it and it's a great name, so it stayed on the list and it's currently my top choice. I think it's also really useful to be able to screen a name for potential associations I might not be aware of; that probably wouldn't change my mind if it was my top choice, but it might if it was bad enough, and I at least want to know. Even negative feedback might make you realize you really do love a name, even if other people don't.

Ultimately, it's up to me and DH, but I appreciate the objective (read: not from my mom or MIL) feedback along the way.

I used it mostly to hear why people didn't like it. If everyone said they didn't like it because it wasn't their style, that was one thing and I would probably keep the name. If every said it reminded them of a famous porn star, I would definitely consider a change.

I don't know if I would base my decision solely on the responses here-- but when I was pregnant with DD we didn't discuss our name choices with anyone, so it was nice to come here and read people's thoughts on different names.

I am a new poster and if and when we decide to have another I will probably post about names here, as we plan on again keeping the names to ourselves.

Also, although I am currently not TTC, this helps me to deal with the bit of baby fever I have been having.Wink

Posting my possible names here was more for fun than a deciding factor.  We were team green with DS and had a super hard time coming up with a girl's name so when we had two to choose from, I posted here to kind of "poll the public."  I found out that most of what is my style is not this board's!  Didn't change my mind though about our name!

I definitely agree!  Sometimes it's nice to hear strangers' opinions.  If I'm undecided between a name or two if people rip it apart and tell me I need to pass on it but the thought of that makes me heart sick then I realize that I might love the name enough to use it, even if they have good reasons not too.  This is especially true with Shenandoah.  It has gotten ripped to shreds on here, but I think it's beautiful.  When we lived out of state it was a top leader for our girl name but since we moved back it's firmly middle name or just guilty pleasure.  I wish I had the guts to use it now.  5 years ago I would have though.  So I wouldn't let them change my mind, but it might help clarify what I'm already feeling.

I do this with Margaret a lot as well.  I already like it a lot, love it on paper.  I just kind of need some reassurance that I can commit to it.  It's like pre wedding jitters and the MOH or BM bucks you up (I didn't have these but see it in the movies).  BNB bucks me up on my choices.  But their mine, I don't let someone else decide.

I think it's helpful because it can help you see how you really feel about a name.  If I polled 2-3 names and one of them was winning, my reaction to that could tell me which name I personally was pulling for.  Know what I mean?

And it also does help if people bring up things you hadn't thought of before or if you're overthinking something.

This. Also, after I made my 'vote for my baby name list' I realized that I don't really care... and some of my favorites are the ones with the lowest number of votes, and I'll use which ever one I want to. haha!

This.

I realize too that I we all have such different naming styles that it's hard to hear some comments, but in the end, you pick what you love. Usually you already have a favorite and just want validation hopefully.

I was interested in what people had to say about our top 4 list, but the most helpful thing was that I could tell by my reaction to people' s responses what my true feelings were.

My biggest concern with the name we decided to go with is that the flow between the first and middle name isn't the best (not horrible, just a little rhymy), I found though that when I read people's input I agreed with people who said the family significance was more important than the flow and felt like the people who said the flow made the name a no-go weren't on the same page as me. So it helped me to see that the flow isn't going to bother me too much.

This. I worry that I would overlook some kind of bad association or something. Or, a great substitute that I may not have even considered. Plus, sometimes it is just nice to see what others have to say.

I just posted yesterday about the two names we have for DS and was just thinking the same thing. I was happily surprised that most replies were in favor of the name I like, but it's ultimately DH and I that make the final cut.

For the sake of your "research," I did offer up the two potential names for DD 2.5 years ago when I was pregnant and NOONE liked the name I loved and we went with it anyway.

I would say that this board has the ability to influence me one way or the other, depending on the situation. When I posted for feedback on Linus while I was pregnant, I definitely got a good amount of posters who were not fans of it. But, there were quite a few pieces of good feedback. It helped me to feel better than although its completely uncommon and not everyone loves it, that its not universally hated. Good enough for me!

On the other hand, Roscoe got mostly negative feedback. But it is still on our list and we like it.

I think overall, BNB is a good soundingboard to find out how the real world might react to a name. But ultimately, yes, H and I will choose what we like regardless.

Oh, and I definitely agree that I like that other posters might point out something I didn't notice about a name. "Oh, Sally Jane is the name of an adult toy manufacturer" or something like that.

I'm getting so big!

I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.

Agreed. I will add, though, that the opinions of posters whose opinions are grounded in etymology or whose lists are similar to mine would weigh more heavily than those of posters I don't know.
