Single Umbilical Artery

I had a ultrasound yesterday at 24 weeks and the doctor told me that the umbilical cord only has one artery and one vein. Then the doctor proceeded to tell me that my unborn son weight is on the low end and that I would have to go see a specialist to get another ultrasound done and other test ran to make sure that everything is okay. I am freaked out because of the complications that could come about. Has anyone else had or have this problem?

The level 2 ultrasound will help them diagnose a more specific reasoning for the single artery. I usually see it refereed to as IUGR which stands for Intrauterine Growth Restriction, since the baby is only getting nutrients from 1 artery, rather than 3. They will want to keep a watch on baby to make sure baby is growing okay, considering. Hugs and good luck with everything.

My DS had a 2 vessel cord too.  I was scared at first but he did not have any other markers so the doctor said it wasn't a huge concern.  We had monthly growth scans and weekly non-stress tests starting at 30 weeks.  He was born a week early at 8.2 pounds and perfectly healthy.  We think that the one vein (or artery? can't remember) compensated by growing larger to make sure the baby received enough nourishment.  Good luck at your next ultrasound!  I bet everything turns out fine so try not too worry.

Try not to worry, having a SUA can be normal as long as the rest of the anatomy scan was normal as well.  The small growth can be due to the SUA alone.

My LO that I lost had a SUA AND cyst in the brain.....two soft markers for Trisomy 18.  But we had BOTH issues.  I don't want to scare you but one thing that helped me was to remember....."today I am pregnant, and I love my baby".  I would tell my baby EVERY DAY, I love you and you are very very special to me."

There is nothing you can do at this point, so try not to stress, take a deep breath and enjoy being pregnant today.  I'm sure all will be OK.  I just was one of the unlucky 1/10000.

My now 3 year old daughter had a SUA.  We were referred to maternal-fetal medicine for a level 2 ultrasound to look for any other markers for congenital anomolies, but everything else looked great.  SUA is actually very common (1 in ~100 or so pregnancies)  and much more often than not is just an isolated anomaly and causes no other issues for the pregnancy.  The arteries (typically 2 of them) carry the blood away from the baby back to the placenta and the vein is the one that delivers the blood to the baby.

We did have non-stress tests towards the end because my doctor just wanted to be extra cautious and a few extra ultrasounds to monitor growth.  She was born at 6lbs 9 oz and has always been at the 50%ile for weight from birth to 3 yrs old.

Good luck!

I just had my anatomy scan this morning and was diagnosed with the same thing, Single Umbilical Artery. I know anytime you hear that something is "off" in a pregnancy it can be scary. My DD had a fetal arrhythmia and we had a level 2 ultrasound with her as well, everything turned out to be fine. My dr. told me to schedule a level 2 ultrasound in the near future and that should be able to identify if there are any other markers such as heart or kidney issues. He also told me he couldn't remember the last time it was anything more than just the SUA. Good luck with everything.

UPDATE:

I had my ultrasound with the specialist and they found that my baby has VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect) a whole in his heart and the artery coming from the right side of the heart is smaller than the artery coming from the left side of the heart and it should be the opposite. They also made me take the blood test for chromosomal disorder to check for Down Syndrome and other defects. I was told that if the whole in his heart does not close then after birth when he is up in size about 3-5 months they will do surgery to correct the problem. I go back today for another ultrasound with the same specialist to get results and I pray that everything comes back fine. I am scared out of my mind but I am trying not to let this control my thoughts. I just put my baby's life and care in God's hands and keep going. No matter what happens I will love him just the same.
