XP: Heartburn. Would love your remedies!

-->

This week is the first week that I have truly experience what pregnancy heartburn has to offer. I haven't penned down definite trigger foods yet, but I highly suspect that milk may be one of them, oddly other dairy products don't seem to have the same effect. I have tried tums and sometimes they work, others they don't. Water seems to make it worse.

Would love to know what has worked for you. At this point, curling up into a blithering ball may be my best solution!

Prilosec has done wonders for me and I suffered from acid reflux before getting pregnant.  OB told me to take it when Zantac wasnt working.  Check it out and GL.

Great suggestion!! I hadn't even thought about that-especially being able to possibly cut it off at the pass before it develops rather than frantically trying to take care of it while hurting. I will definitely give this a shot.

I would ask your Dr., I was prescribed Omeprazole before pregnancy after being diagnosed with GERD, I get heartburn really bad when I eat peanut butter (wierd), or drink more than one cup of coffee in a day, also, tomato based foods and lots of sugar set me off.  They won't allow me to take the Omeprazole, they said I can have a Pepcid if I absolutely need it (I'm 17 wks).  I think all doctors have different opinions, so I would ask first.

 Good Luck :)

This EXACTLY.  My doc approved me to continue my beloved prilosec because taking zantac was about as effective as tic tacs.  I also usually take a gaviscon chewable for immediate relief, as it takes a while for the Prilosec to kick in.

water WILL make it worse

since tums doesn't work for you, have you tried Zantac? or have you tried taking more than 1 tums at a time?

also tea, chocolate, acidic foods can all cause heartburn

When Tums no longer works, try Zantac!! It works wonders when you're pregnant!

Even before I was pregnant, and now that I am, I mix about a teaspoon of baking soda with a small glass of water and stir it in.  It's essentially alka seltzer, without the aspirin, and it is very effective.  The other benefit is it's pretty benign...just make sure you don't overdo it and dump a whole bunch of baking soda in.

I suffer from GERD and therefore horrible pg hearrburn. I will run down what I find has worked at least in part.

1. milk - not to much, just a sip or 2. Too much milk/dairy can actually cause heart burn because of the fat content

2. water - again, not too much, just sips here and there.

3. Tums/Rolaids. I always found Rolaids work better but they don't sell them here anymore, except in the soft chews, which I don't find work.

4. Zantec - 75mg and 150mg. I have used both ans find it works well to prevent heart burn if you know you cant avoid a trigger food

5. Pecid Complete - didn't work for me at all but some people swear by it

6. Gaviscon - I can't handle the fizziness and foaming that goes on, so its a no go for me

 7. Nexium - Prescription heart burn medication. It is one of the more potent ones and is considered a Class C medication. There are no KNOWN risks but no research to prove otherwise either. It is the ONLY thing that helps me now and is my life saver.

Try to avoid spicy, fatty, or acidic foods. Anything tomato based. anything with RED food colouring (I don't know why red, but I am fine with every other colour except red, weird)

Good luck

Oh also try to avoid eating with in an hour or 2 of going to bed. Try sleeping slightly elevated as well to encourage he stomach acids to stay where they should. Try eating smaller meals more often through out the day and avoid the empty hungry feeling, as well as the stuffed feeling.

Mint can be our friend, spearmint works well for me.

I've never had terrible heartburn, but when I've dealt with it here and there, Sprite or fizzy, flavored water helps me.

Prilosec is a wonder drug for me. I took it from 16 weeks on with DD and started it at 20 weeks this time. My triggers were anything that crossed my lips. If your doctor approves it, I would highly recommend giving it a try.
