Jewish name dilemma

DH's grandfather passed away this summer and we want to name the baby after him. His Hebrew name was Tuvia Zelig Asher.
The dilemma is what to call him. Zelig is out. It's an old Yiddish name. So it's between Tuvia and Asher. DH and I both are ok with those names, but DH prefers Tuvia while I like Asher better.
Here's the thing. We live in a Jewish community and our kids would go to Jewish schools where both names are known but uncommon.
I like that with Asher, at least people who aren't Jewish will be familiar with the name too. I know it's become pretty popular but it's not super popular in my community so it's unlikely that he'll be in class with other kids named Asher, or Tuvia for that matter.
Opinions? Advice?

I think Asher is perfect. Its a good name for your community, as well as a cool name in general!

I really believe that when your son steps out into the world (surrounded by all different types of people and religions), Tuvia just is very very different and sounds incredibly feminine. Think about how he'll feel as an adult.

Asher just seems like a much stronger and nicer name

Asher, I am not familiar itch Tuvia and agree with a PP that it sounds feminine (bc of the -ia ending). Since the name is to honor your DH's grandfather I think you should get to say which name, seems fair to me.

I am also Jewish with lots of friends whose kids attend Jewish day school and would definitely choose Asher over Tuvia. Asher is a nice, solid name, whereas Tuvia seems feminine to me. Another option would be to go with the English equivalent of Tuvia, which is Tobias and has the super cute nn of Toby. That would be my pick!

ANother vote for Asher.  Also, Tuvia makes me think of Truvia - the sugar substitute.  :)

I like Asher much much better.  If you think a name like Tuvia won't get picked on in your community, then go for it.  In many public schools, that name would stand out and he might get picked on for it.  It sounds a little feminine.

My vote is for Asher simply because Tuvia sounds a lot like that new sweetener.

I actually really like Tuvia. I also like the PPs suggestion of using the English version Tobias. Asher is also very nice though.

We're also pretty involved in our Jewish community. But, our kids will most likely go to public school.

I like Asher much better. I think it "grows" better. I also like the idea of using Tobias. It's a solid sounding name with the adorable nickname Toby. Although, I do know two Jewish women with the nickname Toby, so I'm wondering if it's used more as a unisex name.

I agree with the majority and vote Asher.

I like Tuvia, but unless you plan on never going to a non-jewish school, store, university, coffee shop or letting your son ever have friends are experiences that are outside of your community.....it sounds a bit girly on a boy. Harsh, but it may be something he resents later on in life. I do like the suggestion of Tobias or Tobiah, but seeing as its a family name I would rather use the actual family name and stick with Asher.

Asher is also becoming increasingly more common (not top 10), so it's a familiar name these days to people outside the jewish community  and is 100% boy!

FYI, it's actually more common to NOT use the exact same name as a deceased relative in the Jewish heritage... unless you are Orthodox or Sephardic. Ashkenazi Jews generally just use the initial of the first name.
