Lazy eye

We finally had our 12 month check up yesterday. The doctor asked if I noticed that her eyes looked in different directions sometimes. When I thought about, I remembered there were a couple times I noticed her eyes weren't looking in the same exact direction but it was so slight I didn't think anything of it. The doctor its pretty common in babies. Rarely it can.get worse and what basically happens is they start to focus with only one eye and the other becomes a lazy eye. She said we'll keep an eye on it. If it hasn't improved by 18 months, its a simple fix by pitting an eye patch over the strong eye so that she gets used to focusing with the weak eye. I'm not too concerned about it. At least it doesn't require surgery to fix. DH wasn't concerned either, just kind of disappointed but I had to remind him that she is a product of us. DH was born cross eyed and needed surgery when he was 1 month old. Anyways, has anyone else had this issue yet?

One of my good friends in kindergarten had to wear an eye patch a few times a week. It was skin colored and no big deal to any of the other kids. I don't remember how long she had to wear it.

DS doesn't have this, however I did as a kid. Definitely catch it as soon as they can. I started wearing an eye patch and doing eye therapy in kindergarten through junior high and honestly it pretty much did nothing. My left eye remains where my brain basically just doesn't use it putting strain on the right. I always wonder if earlier intervention would have helped

DS has one eye that turns in most of the time. I get really concerned about it since the eye doctor told me the brain will just shut that down after time like pp said. My brother also was born cross eyed so it is in our family too. We go in about every 4 months so he is being watched closely. The doctor said there are 2 options. Patch the good eye or try eye drops that make the good eye a little blurred to make the weak eye stronger. Hoping surgery isn't in our future, but if it is, it is.

I agree.  I think early intervention plays a big factor.  That's why I'm glad we caught it so early.  There's a little girl at my church who wears an eye patch and her parents said that it is making a difference.  Hopefully it will correct itself by her 18 month appointment.  But, if not, I'll definitely be pursuing treatment.
