I really like it and have since I was a kid watching "Family Ties." It was even the name of one of my Barbies. The meaning is a bit of a turn off, though, if you care about that sort of thing.

I am not a fan of this name. It bugged me as a kid too, I always thought it sounded funny, kind of dorky. Which I can't figure out because I do like Valerie, but I think the harder sound of the V compared the M helps. I guess it's just NMS.

I've never liked it, but it's not awful.  It's always reminded me of a mallard duck for some reason.

Baby-sitters club, Family Ties, Sliders (this scifi show from the 90s) had a male Mallory in the later seasons - it came from a last name (the character was originally a guy named Quinn Mallory)

I definitely hear Michael J Fox saying it.  Followed by Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross with that exasperated tone. 

 It's ok, but I kind of hate the nn Mal on a girl.

I used to like it - association with Family Ties - and considered it for DD1.  But I don't like the nn Mal and to me Mal = sad in spanish and I wouldn't want that connection.

Personally, I'm not a fan. The meaning of it ("unlucky") is the main reason (the meaning of a name is always quite important to me). But I also don't particularly like the sound of it. But at the same time, it's not a name I would think negatively of if I met someone with it.

It is my DD name.  I got it from "Family Ties" , her middle name is Lou (which was both of my grandmothers middle name, even though it seems on this board it is considered a boys name) I don't like the meaning of her name but I did not let that deter me.

This. I have never heard the name anywhere else and don't really like it. I dislike that a nn could be Mall or Mal (meaning bad in a lot of langauges) and it seems like it fits in better with the jennifers and ashleys of the 80's then anything else.
