We started DD at 18 months. Introduced the potty and let her play with it. Used it as a chair, put toys in it, etc... At 20 months or so, we really started the real training. By two, she was diaper free in the house, out of the house we used pull ups (no difference between that and a diaper in my opnion). By just over two (25 or 26 months) she was diaper free out of the house. She was diaper free at night by 2.5. I also didn't use a smaller toilet seat, just taught DD how to hold on with out falling in. When in public, I held her. I also made sure I knew where all toilets were when out in public. Because when a potty training toddler says "pee pee" or "poo poo" they mean it NOW!

A big part of it is having the vocabulary and understanding to tell you what they need to do. We let DD go half naked around the house or randomly put her on the potty/toilet. Gage when she would need to go by watching how much she drank. Poop was the other issue. Wow.... there were some BIG messes and MANY pairs of underpants thrown out. I think I even threw out a few pairs of pants.

Well, we're big fans of the 3 day method.  They recommend a little before age 2 (22-ish months) as the perfect age for the method.  They recommend not introducing anything before then so that you don't accidentally create a negative association.

We love the 3 day method but also didn't follow it exactly.  We introduced a potty casually a bit after DS started walking.  Daycare worked with him a lot when he moved to the 2-3 room (right around age 2).  We were able to do the 3 day method's boot camp over 2 days just shy of 2.5 and he was fully potty trained after those 2 days.  It's fine to introduce a potty just to explore, but at this age I wouldn't be doing anything more than talking about it (no putting her on it or anything like that)

Most don't start until 2-3 years old. Boys usually take longer to completely train.

My niece just went in for her 18 month check up and the doctor said that usually when they start having an occasional dry diaper during the night, that is a sign they may be ready.

Obviously, things may change but I would like to start maybe August or September. He will be 2 in October and its still warm enough here where he could wear just underwear around the house. We also plan to do the 3 day method.

Eta: if he isn't ready in the fall, I would probably wait and try again in the spring.. Closer to 2.5
