What on earth can you take for a cold?

Or cold like symptoms... It really feels like death but I'm still alive thankfully! lol however my doctors appointments not till later today and I can not sleep or breathe or get comfortable. From what I see online you can't really take a whole lot for this and nothing I have in my home... Does anyone know what is safe? I don't really trust google and ill call my doctor once I can but I'm miserable so I thought I would see

Sorry you are feeling so crummy, I can relate :(  Your answers may vary b/c some doctor's seem to have different opinions, but my midwife said I can use any kind of cough drop and recommended the Cepacol ones because they will help numb the pain in your throat.  She also listed off some cold meds like Robitussin and Sudafed, but I don't recall the exact formula (there are a bunch of different kinds out there).  Sorry, I didn't really listen because I don't really like to take cold medicines.  I have also had a cup of tea with honey and soup...the steam and hot liquid helped with my sinuses and sore throat/cough.  Hope you feel better soon!

I wasn't allowed to take anything at all... I just drank hot water with lemon to help my throat and ate a lot of jello and toast as it's all my stomach would take.  Had it for almost 4 days, complete with sinus infection.  I'd talk to your dr and hopefully they will let you take something.

I drank a ton of water (it's amazing how much this helps!) and ate lots of soup. I was ok to take vitamin C drops too for soothing my throat. My doctor wanted to see if I could go w/out the cold medicines, and thankfully I was able to make it through. Good luck and feel better!

Different docs have different recs regarding over the counter meds. I've had 3 colds over the course of my pregnancy--I took Tylenol for body aches, Benadryl to sleep, drank lots of juice, water, and tea (honey's great for sore throat), and used a humidifier next to the bed to help with my stuffy nose.

Many safe lists say all Tylenol products are fine, so the cold and sinus version is ok. Robitussin and mucinex are also fine. I was really sick recently and obviously you have to weigh the benefits and risks. I ended up with bronchitis so I tend to think its better to treat it so it doesn't get worse. I also took mucinex but I really couldn't breathe. Keep in mind that you're in 3rd tri so the risks are reduced a lot. Most of the concerns about phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine are more pronounced in 1st tri.

I'm working through one right now too, I've been taking tylenol for the sore throat/achiness, occasional cough drops, tea and hot soup, and as the congestion has kicked in I've been using Vicks VapoRub.  The steam from hot showers helps loosen the crud up too.  Above all, lots of water and fluids.  A neti pot might help too if it gets really bad.

Tylenol PM will help, at least to get a little sleep. Otherwise, not much of anything.

If you are super congested, I suggrest the Netti pot. It works wonders. Other than that load up on some vitamin C. Sit in a steaming bathroom with Vicks either on your chest or just have the container opened near you. Drink lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of water haha.  At night pop a bendryl so you can sleep a little better. Good Luck!

My OBs office sent a list home at the first visit of safe meds. Sudafed is fine if your BP is normal. Plain formula Robitussin (not DM or any of the others) is fine too. And cough drops and saline spray.

Sudafed (the kind behind the pharmacy counter) is safe according to my OB. I have had this lingering cold for over 3 weeks now with no relief though, so I am off to see my PCP for possible infection and antibiotic. My dr said a zpak or penicillin are safe.

Im drinking the max allowable organic green tea (3 cups day) with honey, tons of water with fresh squeezed lemon, a benadryl at night, and a little tylenol as needed. Have been doing all this but the cold just kept getting worse.  Horrible night sweats (no fever, tho) and horrible sinus and bronchial infection.  I caved and took the amoxicillin the dr prescribed because i was choking on what i was coughing up.  24 hrs into the antibiotics i swear am feeling a touch better.  Terribly inconvenient time of yr to sick, right?  But my main concern is that by birth this is well in the past.  We have to save our strength for labor and then the exciting weeks after that..

I'm on week 3 of a cold and have been using off and on with varying degrees of success: Sudafed, Mucinex, and Tylenol.  It really depends on your symptoms.  Mine developed into a sinus infection, so I got a zpak to clear that up.  I also find that using a Breathe Right strip at night with my humidifier cranked up helps me to sleep relatively well.  Once my sinus infection was gone, I've found the most success wit Mucinex just keeping the mucous loosened up enough to drain out.  Also, most any throat lozenge is OK if you have a sore throat.  Good luck, its no fun, I know!

I've had two colds so far this pregnancy. I've taken Tylenol, Sudafed, Mucinex, and Benadryl depending on my symptoms. Basically you just want to treat the symptoms you have and not get the multi-action medications.

Nothing is going to help the cold - just mask the symptoms.  So you have to decide what is really unbearable and consider treating the symptom.  I had a really bad cold a few weeks ago and I took Robitussin DM because I needed to clear up some of the congestion in my throat.  I only took it for two days; definitely helped me sleep at night.

You should definitely call your ob and ask for sure. Mine said Tylenol and Robitussin products are okay. Be sure to avoid aspirin and medications with sleep aids.
