Anything in crib at this point?

DS turns 9 months tomorrow and - like clockwork - we've hit the 9 month sleep regression stage. He's always been a great sleeper but bedtime has become torture for him - and us.  He still technically sleeps through the night but it is taking anywhere from an hour to an hour and half of hysterical crying for him to finally fall alseep.

To date, we have not ever put anything in the crib with him with the exception of a pacifier if needed.  At this stage, is it still unsafe to put a little lovey blanket in?  Just looking for anything to help soothe our poor little guy but at the same time, I still really don't like the idea of anything in his crib with him.

TIA for any thoughts or suggestions!

I've never put anything in the crib yet.  He sleeps with a sleepsack on.  DS is sort of a wildman when he sleeps.  He flops all over, turns, etc.  I feel like anything I put in there would just get tangled up with him, or end up pushed into the corner.

FWIW, when DS was around that age, he went through about a 1-2 week period where bedtime was total torture.  I don't know if it was teeth or what his deal was.  I started to get super anxious about it.  After a few weeks, he was back to normal, but I totally remember that.  It was awful.

She sleeps with a blanket and a lovey.  She doesn't really care about the lovey yet, but one day she probably will.  She scoots around alot some nights, but the blanket (which is  at her waist down) aways goes with her, it's pretty funny - that thing never moves off of her.

BTW, we asked the pedi before using the blanket around 9.5 mos  - she said it was fine.

Once we stoppped swaddling DD2, we used a blanket. She had a pacifier as well, and for the past three or so months, she has had a little lovey she usually ignores, but was all over it last night.

We've used blankets for a long while. He's also been able to pull a blankey off his face to play peek-a-boo since 5 months, maybe earlier? Plus I always put it waist down, so I'm not too worried. I think the safety concerns about things in the crib goes away when babies can move themselves around. They're smart enough to lay on their tummies without their faces smushed into the mattress, and smart enough to adjust if a blankey gets on top of their face.

I used to have other things, like a few toys in the crib hoping he'd preoccupy himself in the mornings so I could get just a few more minutes. But there was no point, they'd end up in the corner & ignored, or thrown in anger about his room.

Even since Ellie has been sleeping in her crib in her room - 6 months - she has had a binky and her "burp rags".  I use to tuck these by her chin when she drank her bottle since she spilled so much.  Now when she wants to be comforted she will pick up a white rag.  She has to have this to nap and sleep.  It is a very small piece of cloth and she can move it wherever she wants.

Aside from binky and burp rag, we don't put anything else in the crib.  Christmas Eve is Ellie's 9 month mark so I hope we don't have a sleep regression.  Thanks for the heads up though!

LO has been sleeping with her lovey (a stuffed monkey called HAIL MONKEY because of the way he soothes her when its bedtime) for.. two months now? I used to go in and take him out of her crib once she'd fallen asleep, but now just leave him in there with her.

We'd feel safe with a knit blanket at this point, but she just kicks blankets right off.

DD has been sleeping with her fisher price seahorse since she was maybe about 5-6 months old.  She'll be one next month.

I think once your LO is strong enough to roll back to front consistently, a toy or pillow in the crib is OK.

We've given DD a lovey (this one: http://www.amazon.com/Carters-Plush-Security-Blanket-Elephant/dp/B005537BU4/) since she was 4 or 5 months old. Sometimes she also has the Fisher Price Seahorse, too. I would feel comfortable using a knitted blanket. But she squirms around so much that it wouldn't end up keeping her any warmer.

DD2 sleeps with her wubbanub and her Fisher Price seahorse in her crib. Sometimes she turns on her seashorse and puts herself back to sleep. I think DD1 was around 18 months when we finally gave her a blanket. It's very thin though, and she likes to sleep with it ON her face. Oy. I don't know when we'll give DD2 a blanket.

My LO has had a lovey and a blanket for as long as I can remember. I think it started when he moved to the crib at 4 or 5 months. He almost cannot fall asleep without a lovey. Fortunately, that could be the sleeve on my bathrobe or his actually lovey, and he clings on to that thing for dear life in his sleep. Do whatever your comfortable with. But technically, I think the recommendation is nothing in the crib before a year.

I know what you mean, I wasn't comfortable with anything in his crib at 9 months, or even 10. Now, at 11+ months and DS is walking, I figure it is fine. I just started putting his big heavy fuzzy blanket in his crib with him at night. He reaches for it and gets a big smile. I probably went with the heaviest thing possible:) You could start with a lighter muslin blanket (like aiden+anais) or something breathable or small. Also, start using it at nap time so you can watch him with it and make sure it's nothing he will get tangled up in.

We don't have anything in the crib; she sleeps in a sleep sack.  So far she hasn't need a lovey or anything to fall asleep, and she is wild so a blanket would come off immediately.  I would be fine with a small lovey made of a loose knit or muslin if she needed it, but so far she is fine without so I'm not getting involved. Smile

The AAP says nothing I the crib until after 12months.  We do have a stuffed toy in her crib and she sleeps with a blanket.  She doesn't care about the doll at all, and if she gets too wiggly she kicks the blanket to the bottom of the crib.  They've both been in her crib for 3 months or so.

Thank you everyone for sharing what you've been doing! It's very helpful! I'm off next week with DS so it will be a good time to experiment during his naps with what may help him and with what I feel comfortable putting in the crib.

Happy Holidays!

Yay! My DD does this too. She loves that stinkin' seahorse.

We also have a little 6 inch by 8 inch fuzzy blankie on one side, and satin on the other that we call, "Bunny Blanket" that she sleeps with. She just holds it and rubs it until she falls asleep.

The plus? You can give her "Bunny Blanket" and seahorse, and put on some white noise and she will sleep just about anywhere. :)

DS2 has been sleeping with a light blanket since about 6 months when he started standing. DS1 didn't start standing til he was like 11 months so we didn't switch to a blanket until then.

DS has 4 or 5 soft toys one of which is his special kitty cat that he goes to sleep with.  He has also had blankets in his crib since he went into it at 4 1/2 months.  Now he's got 3 blankets.  I keep knit blankets that aren't too big so baby doesn't get tangled up in them.

I'm just lurking, but I would be careful about a blanket. A good friend of mine went to a funeral of an eleven month old who wrapped himself in his blanket. Just thinking about it makes me nauseous.
