Intro & SA Question

Hi! I've been lurking for about year and more often than is probably healthy. I turned 30 last month, and DH is 42. We've been married just over a year and have been TTC since March. Cycle #12 (which I know is not the same as 12 months) just started so I'm trying to gather some info in case this cycle is bust as well. DH doesn't move quickly on things so it will be a few months before he does anything once we start talking about testing and such. Which is why I want to start the conversation soon and hope we never have to move forward with it.

My question is: can his PCP order an SA or does he need to start with an urologist? Or does he only move on the to the urologist if there's an issue?

TIA! Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season! We're expected to get 14 inches of snow and 50mph winds in the next 24 hours. FX my work closes tomorrow and my vacation begins a day early!

My DH's first SA was ordered through his PCP, and only after that when it came back w/ poor results was he referred to a urologist who specializes in MFI.

Me Dx: Weak Ovulation / Total Thyroid Removal
DH Dx: Mild MFI (borderline all 3), Varicocele
TTC#1 since 5.11
Clomid 50mg + TI = Poor Response
Clomid 100mg + TI (x2) = BFNs
Clomid 100mg+IUI#1 (5.6M Post Wash & 1 Follicle) = BFN
Surprise BFP on 1/20/13 EDD: 9/25/13 It's A Girl!!

Welcome!  My obgyn ordered DHs SA.  He has to go to a urologist, only because he had low results.  I would start with his PCP or your obgyn. 

Good luck with the snow - and hopefully getting the day off!  We are only supposed to get 1-3" tonight.

Thanks so much. Now, he just needs to get a PCP. Which he has to do next month anyway due to insurance. He never goes to the doctor.

Me:35 DH:37 TTC#1 since 4/2012 Me DX: Hashimotos,Hypothyroid, DOR-low AFC, all other tests normal. DH: normal

IUI #1 50 Clomid,75 GonalF,Ovidrel,Progesterone = fair response,BFN

IUI #2 150 Gonal F, Ovidrel, Progesterone= ok response but BFN

IUI#3 225 Gonal F - Cancelled IUI due to early O- TI

Neither my OB or DH's PCP would order the SA (annoying!), but the PCP referred DH to a urologist.  Our RE also re-did the SA and is the one who actually diagnosed the MFI.  Good luck!
