Posterior Baby

So at my last midwife appointment I was told this LO is face up "sunny side up" or Posterior.  My midwife didn't say much about it, just that it could turn, and to spend time on all fours or swimming to see if that can help.

Since then I have been a bit obsessed with this. I want to have a natural unmediated birth. I keep trying to think, lots of women have natural births with a posterior baby, but then after doing a bit of research, there are lots of things can go wrong, and labour can be much harder, as well the baby getting stuck during birth.

Did anybody else have a sunny side up baby? I was never worried about birth before, and now I am constantly thinking "turn baby turn". I need to some how embrace the " my body was made for this" thinking again.

My Sil delivered my nephew sunny side up. Besides tearing (alot) everything was fine.

Sending you good vibes that baby will flip!

ETA: Are you team green? I can't remember..

DS was sunny side up the last weeks of my pregnancy. I spent A LOT of time on all fours. As often as I could. He eventually turned and came out normally.

Thanks! I tore with DD, quite a bit, so that would be the least of my worries. We're Team Pink, and she's still nameless... we need to get on it. I want my midwife to just lie to me and be like wow she flipped. Then I can go back to being calm about everything.

Awesome! During labour? Or before?

Jude was sunny side up. I had serious back contractions (which should really be called butt contractions. I felt everything right in my butt) to get the ball rolling and immediately got an epi. Even with the epi, I could tell that the pressure was much more intense than with my first son. Usually babies will flip while they are in the canal, but Jude twirled into the world- flipping as I did the final push. Little brat.

Last night, I was talking to a friend about this and her second was sunny side up and she went natural. She said that if she could do it over, she'd get an epi because the pain was so awful and she didn't have that "forget all about it the second it is over" experience that she did with her firstborn.

Also, as a result of Jude being sunny side up and feeling every bit of pressure in my butt, on my first push I, yes, pooped on the table.

Not trying to scare you. I know tons of women do this! You can too!

AND chances are he will flip before the bit event!! Good luck!

I had one!! You can do it!!

I ended up having to push for 4 hours. I did it without pain medication. It was very hard to get him out in that position! At the end we ended up having to put the vaccum on his head to help pull him out. He had a huge lump on his head from the vaccum and his head was all black and blue. They said that was from ramming into my pelvic bone for 4 hours. Poor little guy. I can't believe they didn't send me for a c-section. I would do it all over again exactly the same way!!

Here's his poor little head. I don't have any pictures of the black and blue. I always kept a hat on him because it made me sad! It went away after a few weeks!

Oh, speaking of head shape!

Be prepared for his cone to be "backwards" a bit- Because of how they are positioned, their cone will generally point forward a bit. Jude's was WILD looking.

I pushed for about 20 minutes with my first and over an hour with my second. No biggie, just something to be prepared for!

I pushed 3 times with DD, her head was perfectly round. My friend has warned me about head shape already.

Poor little Linc! Good for you for sticking it out that long, glad to hear it can be done.

DD2 was for sure posterior at my appt the day before she was born. I believe she was still this way when I went into labor as I had a lot of back pain. We believe she turned right before she was born.

Anyways, the day before going into labor, I did tons of pelvic rocks. I also checked out spinningbabies.com. Look into those.

When you do go into labor and if you think she is still posterior, I would recommend laboring on your hands and knees. I did this and leaned against my exercise ball. Or try to stay upright. Just don't lay on your back. These were all recommendations that my doula gave me.

Good luck!

Both of my girls were posterior and were delivered sunny side up.  I had to push a little longer and I had 2nd degree tears both times, but with DD2 I went all natural.  You can do it!

I don't have experience with sunny side up, but I just wanted to say that you can totally do it!  I hope that she turns by your next appointment and you can get back to focusing on an awesome birth experience.  I've done two natural births and I would do it again in a heart beat.  Good luck, I can't believe how close you are getting!

Both mine were OP. For me it was NBD, so hopefully it won't be for you either. 20 minutes of pushing with DS and he had a horrible cone head for about a month. Just a few pushes with DD and no cone head. I did have back labor and a 2nd degree tear both times, so that kinda blew.

ETA both were drug free. You can do it!

DD1 turned posterior during labor! So yours could very well turn back on its in.

I delivered her vaginally with an epi after 2 hrs of pushing. The cord was wrapped around her neck as well.

DD1 was born sunny side up.  A little bit of tearing and the back labor part kind of sucked but no meds, just a few minutes of pushing (and only a 4 hour labor) and a normal looking head when she was out so I don't really consider it to be a big deal.  I will say that back labor hurt worse than labor with a regularly positioned baby (DD2) but it obviously didn't stop me from doing it again.  If you're willing to try it, you will probably be fine.
