What changes have you had with your cervix?

Two weeks ago my cervix was measuring at 5, then a week ago it was measuring at a 4.9, and today it was measuring 4.5.  Now I know 4.5 is still good, but the change is scary and makes me think something is started.  So I was wondering if your cervix changed like that, if you saw any changes at all?  My doctor isn't worried right now, but of course I am.

I went from a 4.5 to 4.2 to 3.6 to 4.1 to 3.7. The cervix is dynamic and changes a lot. Seeing the fluctuations is hard but you really shouldn't worry with the numbers you have.

ETA I had another check today and it ranged between 4.2 and 4.5 depending on the angle. My OB usually takes a series of measurements.

You really did answer my question well.  The number changes is what I wanted to see.  I just hope it doesn't move to much.  I just can't help but worry.  Like you said it is hard to see changes.

My honest opinion would be not to worry too much. Your doctor knows what's best and anything above 4 is still pretty thick. My cervix shortened to 1.5 at 20 weeks. I had to have an emergent cerclage. If your doctor thinks there is a problem he/she will keep an eye on it. Good luck.

::lurking from TTCAL::

4.5 is a good number.  The "danger zone" (as my doctor calls it) is around the 2 cm mark.

My cervix went from 3.6 to 3.7 so far with this pregnancy. I think a variance can also be attributed to different ultrasound techs. I try to have the same girl each time. Your numbers sound great!!

Thanks for all the responses. I really appreciate you guys taking the time. I know everything looks good right now. I just am starting to worry because there is an obvious change and we are approaching the time when I started to have issues. Fortunately I usually have Non painful contractions with changes in cervix and I haven't yet. I hope yesterdays change is not indicative of issues to come. I guess my sono next week will tell me.

I freaked out looking at my numbers the first few weeks (5 prior to 15 weeks, then 4.7, 4.2, and 3.6).  I was not okay with the slope of that line.  But then the next week it was >4, then down to 3.7 at my a/s.  Today it was 4.2.  I think the initial shortening was normal and just what happens when the baby has some actual weight.  And now it fluctuates within a certain range.

I also really think the 17p shots are helping me. We'll never know exactly what happened last time, but I went from having a normal cervical length at 18 weeks (3.6) to being in preterm labor 2 weeks later with an infection.  Whether my cervix is holding up this time because it just isn't an issue (and wasn't last time) or because the shots are helping is just something I don't think we'll ever know.

Your numbers are awesome and the slight difference is nothing....they are looking for a big difference and that's when it is concerning.  The little fluctuation could be just how the person placed the dots when measuring.

With my first pregnancy I was a 4 at 19 weeks...then dropped down to 2.5 at 23 weeks and then 1.5 at 28 weeks with dialation and thats when they get really worried.

This pregnancy I started at a 2.8 at 11 weeeks and had a cerclage placed then.  I go bi weekly and my measurments stayed b/w 2.8-3 until 22 weeks and then jumped to 4.4 and have been anywhere b/w there and 3.3 at my appt yesterday at 28+ weeks and they haven't said a thing about being worried.  The cervix is dynamic and is expected to change, it is a big change that they don't want to see

I was suppose to start those 17p injections a couple weeks ago, but my insurance is messing everything up. After five hours and even tears I might get them next week at 19 weeks. Ugh. Glad to hear your cervix is longer and doing well.

the cervix is dynamic and changes constantly.  your changes seem slight so i wouldn't be too concerned.  try not to stress yourself out too much, esp if dr. is not concerned.

After an emergency cerclage and modified bed rest at 21.5 weeks, we welcomed our babies via scheduled c-section at 38.5 weeks! Truly blessed!

Your cervix will change all the time- they are dynamic and that's what they do. In general, anything above a 3 is fine, and above a 4 is really really good. I think you are totally fine. I wouldn't worry.

FWIW my cervix at it's longest is 3cm (22 weeks). I've never measured a 4, even at 13 weeks. With DD it was about 2.6 at 33 weeks, 1cm at 36 weeks and I delivered that week. This time it was 2.5 at 33 weeks and is about 2cm right now.
