Cate or Catherine?

The C is important because it's a family name. We would call her Cate.  My only hesitation about going with Catherine is that it is rhyme-y with Addison (DD) and doesn't fit as a sibset in terms of style.  My hesitation with Cate is that it is a nickname & doesn't give her as many options.

I prefer Catherine, nn Cate. What about other C names? I think these go well with Addison-

Carys, Chloe, Corinne, Caitlin, Cora, etc..

Catherine. You can always call her Cate, but when she is older she will have the choice. Cate does sound like a nn.

You should go with Catherine with the NN Kate. I really do not like Kate spelled with a C, I think it looks weird.

Kate is the #1 girl name on our list. DH & I don't like Katherine and know we'd call her Kate any way so we're sticking with Kate...unless it's a boy of course : )

Having said that, I think Catherine and Addison go fine together.

I haaaate nn's for a first name. Give the kid a choice to have a more grown up option some day.

I don't think Catherine rhymes with Addison, but they don't go together well, IMO.

FWIW, my DD is Kate (not Katherine). However, I don't love the Cate spelling and somehow that does seem more like it should be short for something.

Usually I'd agree, but Kate is a pretty grown up name. I think naming your child Katie is different.

I don't think it is too rhymey with Addison. But if you are planning on calling her Cate, I would just name her Cate. Although Cate with a "C" has always looked weird to me. I like Claire/Clara. Addison and Claire/Clara

Since I think Catherine/Katherine is one of the prettiest names ever. I think you should go with the full formal name and call her Cate. I do think if you spell the formal name with a C you should also spell the nn with a C.

I like Catherine with nn Cate.  I don't think it rhymes with Addison at all, and like that both names are more formal and can be shortened.

As someone who almost always goes by a shortened version of my given name, I will say that I am still happy to have a nice formal name in certain situations.  Im glad my parents didn't decide to just name me by my nickname.

I completely understand how Addison and Catherine aren't the same style, were having the same issue! That being said anyway, I definitely prefer Catherine over Cate. I'm not a fan of nicknames as first names.

I LOVE the name Catherine- really dislike Cate. My best friend in HS was named Catherine, she ONLY went by Catherine, never Cate, certainly not Cathy. When we wanted to shorten it, we called her Cath.

I agree with this.  While Cate can definitely work as a standalone "grownup" name, there is a definite chance that in some professions she will be diminutized to Catie by the "Ole Boys Network."  There is less a chance of that happening with Catherine.  In addition, Catherine gives her more options with a married name that may not sound as lovely with Cate as your current last name.

I also prefer Catherine with the nn Cate.  As you said, it gives her options.  My DD is Katherine nn Kate and I have zero regrets about giving her the formal name even though we call her Kate most of the time.

Other C names I like - Claire, Caroline, Clara, Carys, Clementine, Colette...
