breech

I managed to get into my full 20wk u/s yesterday - good thing as we have received 19" of snow SO FAR...

The doctor said the baby was breech. They said it's nothing to worry about but I can't help but be concerned.

At what point does this become a concern?

Baby is no where big enough to stay breech or vertex right now, so don't worry. They will probably do another scan for you around 34-36wks. If baby is breech then, they might try an external version to help baby flip or schedule you for a c/s.

They start worrying about breech around 30 weeks+. Baby has plenty of time to do some flipping.

Yeah, that is not a concern at all.
My Ds was breech up until my 34 week appointment and he still managed to flip.....

I would be concerned in the last few weeks getting ready for delivery. At this point, baby could move any which way.

What was dumb exactly? The doctor said the baby is breech now, but isn't concerned. Seems like a pretty fair thing to say.

36w is when my doctor said she'd be "worried" about it. Not so much worried, just more of a chance after that point that baby won't flip.

It's still way early, too - so don't be too concerned now. My baby flips between breech, transverse, and diagonal so there's still a lot of time for movement.

how in the world can a 20 wk old baby be "breeched"????? babies are in all different kinds of positions in utero that early. Breeched was the wrong choice of word and should not have even been said. bad terminology on the dr's part.

Yes the baby can move all over, but at the time of the scan the baby was breech. That was the appropriate termology. I asked the position of my baby just because I was curious and the baby was vertex. Does it mean the baby will stay like that? No, but that was the case at the time of the sscan. It sounds like her doctor said its nothing to be concerned about at this stage.

Um, what? Breech is a position, it was the right choice of word. It is completely possible for a baby to be breech at 20 weeks, doesn't mean the baby will stay that way.

Russianmommy, get a clue. "Breech" is a presentation. Babies, especially at 20 weeks, can be breech one minute and not the next. Yes, they flip and move all around. However, at the moment, if the doctor said the baby was breech, then the baby was, in fact, breech. I have weekly ultrasounds due to some complications and baby has been breech for the last four weeks, at least he/she has been during every single u/s. Would the doctor be incorrect in telling me that my baby was breech? No. Does that mean baby won't turn/isn't moving around in between scans? No. What would you expect the doctor to say?

ETA: OP, I wouldn't worry at all now. My OB isn't concerned with position until at least 36 weeks. Baby has plenty of time to move!

Breech is just a position just like my DD was at 20 weeks as is transverse which my DD was at 25 weeks. At 30 weeks she went back to breech and stayed that way until I gave birth. It was never a worry for my Dr though. At 34 weeks she scheduled me for a c/s just in case but that the baby could flip at the last minute. She gave me a bunch of exercises and suggested I take yoga to help the baby flip. I did both but at 39 weeks and 4 days she was still breech. I not want to do a manual inversion it just seemed a little to risky to me. I ended up having the c/s and eveything turned out fine.

Many babies are breech at 20w (and yes, that is the correct terminology for being head up regardless of the gestational age), as PPs have said, its typically not a concern until around 35ish weeks.  They still have plenty of room to flip all around prior to that.

At this point your baby can still turn (and may do so again and again).  Once you hit 34, 35, 36 weeks they start running out of room, but I wouldn't worry about it until you're in your mid 30 weeks.  My twins were breech, I was able to get one to turn doing some yoga moves I found online (at least that's what I'm crediting him turning to).  There's also acupuncture and a chiropractor that's experience with it can do the Webster technique.  One I get further along if the baby I'm carrying is still breech I'll be doing as much as possible to get him to flip to avoid a RCS.  Good luck, but don't worry at this stage, it's pointless right now.

No reason to worry at all! My baby flipped around multiple times daily until after 32 weeks which is when my u/s tech said they normally start getting into position. You really don't need to worry until closer to 36 weeks.

I don't think it's a dumb thing to say. If it accurately describes the position of the baby, it's useful information to help a woman picture the baby inside of her.

I think the dr probably should have said that its not a big deal at this point in the pregnancy and perhaps explained why not.... But I don't think it was a dumb thing to say.
