Getting antibiotics into your LO

What's your strategy? LO has strep. We have the medicine, liquid amoxocillin.But kid 3, parents 0 in getting a dose into him.

Strategy one: talk about all the people/characters he admires and how they take their medicine. Result: laughter and refusal.

Strategy two: subterfuge - mix it in yogurt. + bemusement - applaud and dance when he takes a bite. Result: ate some, but then threw it all up.

Strategy three: promise a video if he takes a dose. Result: takes some and spits it up.

 I'd really like him to get better soon!

He's had that antibiotic before correct?  I've not had C outright refuse medicine but he has done exactly this (refuse then throw up) with several foods he ended up being allergic to.  I'm sure this is more of a "I just don't want the medicine" thing though.  It sounds like you've tried all the tricks I know of.  Maybe mix it into a small milkshake or smoothie?

Other than that, we use the big syringe thing for medicine we thing he might not want and you could put it way at the back, against LO's cheek.  Or, you can go back to the pedi and just get a shot.  I think they do use that as a last resort.  Since you're batting 0 right now though, I'd call the pedi in the morning since he's still not had a full dose yet.  Good luck!  :-(

Hazel's on antibiotics right now too. She's all like "mmmm med-cin!" She asks for it every time she sees it. She's such a weirdo. 

We use the big syringe thingy though, so that might help.

B likes taking his medicine now, but when he was younger we did the 'squirt it in the back of his throat' method.

I can't remember if amoxocillan tastes bad, but you can have the pharmacist flavor it when you get it filled.

I have to lay her down, pinch the side of her cheeks so she looks like a fish, stick the syringe into the back of her throat, squeeze it out and she swallows.

I know that sounds drastic, but that was the only way we could get her to take medicine without spitting it out and we tried everything. She was recently battling pneumonia and was on a few meds, so she got used to them and now takes it fine.

Oh, and when I was telling the pharmacist about how hard it was to give my son medicine when he was little (he was even worse than E and would make himself throw up), he told me that some antibiotics can be made into a suppository. lol

J is a medicine fiend right now. He reminds us every night to give him his antibiotics. But we still use the dropper and squirt it in the back of his cheek. I agree with pp, if nothing is working, call your pedi and get the shot.

My kid loves medicine, but he gets allergy meds daily, so he's used to taking it. Honestly, I would try bribing again. It sucks, but once you know LO can take the medicine and keep it down , you can negotiate a bit more. Oh, and our pharmacist recommended that we refrigerate Amox to make it taste better even though you technically don't have to. GL!

We are going through this now.

We bribe. 

She gets "soda" in between sips of the medicine, to help with the taste, and also candy. 

Every other try led to her spitting it back out at us, or not drinking it quick enough in the juice. 

We also had the pharmacy flavor it, in hopes that would help. 

 It has been stressful since she never gave us issues when giving her tylenol or any other meds in the paste, so part  of me thinks its a phase too.

I'm just mean.  Pinch nose so he opens mouth.  Take syringe of meds and squirt into back of cheek.  Done.  Usually he takes medication without a fight though - probably because he knows how it's done if he squacks about it. :)

G hates taking meds. The only liquids I've had to give were tylenol and advil though for teething or fevers and I've had to strategically squirt it into his mouth with a syringe while he watched tv lying down. Then he gets a big sip of water. Theres no way any other method would work,

My doc told me amoxicillin tastes good. The first time we gave it to o, he fought. Now he begs for it. If he fought it, I would hide it in something strong that I know he'd drink....fruit smoothie, grape juice, etc.

Thanks all. I think we're going to get all good-cop, bad-cop today. DH stocked the fridge with chocolate pudding and raspberry applesauce (mediums for subterfuge), and I'm steeling myself for the syringe squirting. We actually tried using the syringe last night, but he spit it up, so we may have to resort to a call to the pedi for a shot.
It's flavored & it's cold, so I'm not sure why he's so objecting to it. Hopefully I'm not forcing down a medicine to which he's allergic! That would be awful!

He's still asleep (uncharacteristically), so I'm hoping he's getting the rest he needs.
