Tapthathank - paci question

I started to try your method of soothing LO without the paci during the night.   Can you do me a huge favor and walk me thru some additional details?

I know you said to let him cry for 10 mins and then go in to talk to him BUT, what if you cannot calm him by simply talking and touching him?  Our LO was so awake and screaming that I couldn't calm him back down.  On the first try I'll admit it, I caved and gave him back the paci.  Obviously I suck, and am being controlled by an almost 4 month old!

i will be trying again tomorrow night when DH can help more (I wasn't able to get help from him tonight since he needs to work tomorrow) but we can both work on this Friday night and I'd love some more advice on how easily you could calm your LO and how many tries this took throughout the night?

i have an incredibly hard time hearing him scream.... I'm just not cut out for the CIO method, even though I logically understand it's what I need to do to break this habit.

Most recommendations for CIO are 6 months. At 4 months baby is too young to actually get what's going on. Anyway, to each his own though, it just may be more difficult at this age, unless your just trying to CIO so he wears himself out and falls asleep.

We are not doing CIO, I'm not even a proponent of this method of sleep training regardless of age...but, as you said, to each his own.  I am desperately trying solve an hourly pacifier need throughout the entire night.   I need LO to be able to fall back asleep after the paci falls out of his mouth without having to get up hourly ( or even every half hourly) to put it back in.

I'm so sorry -  I just saw this post!!  I will try to figure out how to send you a PM too.

I agree with you...it is so, so hard to listen to your baby cry.  We went in after 10 min to *try* to calm him by talking to him and rubbing his belly.  We started unswaddling him at this point too so that he could self-soothe with his hands.  We shushed very loudly in his ear.  He calmed for a little bit, but started crying as soon as we left the room again.  He cried for 5 min more and fell asleep.  I agree with PP about him wearing himself out.  I almost caved and told my DH that I couldn't do it, but then LO fell alseep.  I even said to my DH he only fell asleep because he wore himself out.  But to my surprise, he didn't wake up crying for his paci until a week later and then he only wimpered/cried for 5 min and we didn't have to go in and soothe him at all.

You just need to be consistent with your method.  Once you start doing this in the MOTN you shouldn't just all of a suddent start giving back the paci.  And this method may not work for you and your LO.  I wouldn't try it without my DH there for moral support.  Other people may not agree with this method, but it was what our pediatrician recommended and it worked for us.
