NWMR: Xmas open house / engagement party

Some good friends of ours recently got engaged. They are visiting for Christmas and the groom's parents invited us to a 'holiday open house / engagement party' on Sunday.

I have to admit I've never been to an engagement party before. What do we bring? If it was a holiday party, I would bring an appetizer, and I think you normally bring a gift to an engagement party. But what kind of gift? Do I bring both an appetizer and a gift?

I would bring a bottle of wine.  E-parties, IMO, are NOT gift giving events.  You're going to have a shower (possibly) AND a wedding to attend.  That's enough gifts.

In my opinion, engagement parties are a gift-giving event, but it doesn't have to be a large gift.  A bottle of champagne would be fine.  I have only been to engagement parties for DH's siblings so we got them larger gifts, but for a friend a small gift is fine.
