Am I being unreasonable? UPDATED

There were rumors in our district that people were going to come and kill all the students in all the schools today. That, coupled with the end of the world, makes it so I have 11 students missing today. Earlier in the week, I had sent home a letter asking for two dollars for treats for today. I got 60 dollars and spent 30 bucks on treats and 30 bucks buying a craft for each kid because I wanted to use all of the money. Well, I have 7 of the 11 who have called and want their money back or for me to postpone the party until after break. Now, I can't postpone the party, but I don't have any money to give back. I've told all the parents no and they have all gotten mad and are calling my boss. Am I being unreasonable to not give the money back?

ETA: Well, usually boss never backs me up. I went to see her at prep. She is going to call each parent and told them that they wouldn't get their money back. However, if they want to bring their child in for just the party they can and they are more than welcome to stay to make sure their child is safe, which seemed like a fair proposition to me! I wonder if any will take her up on her proposition!

Absolutely not. It was their choice not to send their kids to school today. xShould you have to replan your curriculum at the last minute because they chose to keep their child home? And it was $2. I can't believe they asked for it back.

Aw, that's terribly $hitty.  I'm really sorry!  No I would not expect that you'd have to return the money since they chose not to send their kids to school.  I hope your principal backs you on this.

Let them call your boss. I would think that if they are keeping thier kid home due to school threats and the "end of the world", they have better things to worry and think about than 2 freaking dollars.

Lord help me if I'm ever that b*tchy to my kids teachers.

I don't think it's unreasonable at all for you to say no to returning their money.  You asked, they gave, you bought & planned.  They pulled their kid out of school to miss out on it. It should be their loss, not yours.

Not unreasonable at all!  If their kid is out for whatever reason, unfortunately, they miss out on that day's activities and that includes money already SPENT to plan them!  Hope your boss backs you.

Who has the time to worry about $2.00? They had it to give in the first place, or should not have if they weren't in the position. I am sorry that you have to deal with this, and truly hope that your boss supports your decision. Good luck, and report back if you can.

Your boss better back you up!  I would definitely give said boss a heads up though.  So it can be a conversation w/ the parent something like "yes, I've talked to *Ms Teacher* and I agree w/ her decision"

And seriously?  $2.

I don't think so, because they chose to keep their child home...you couldn't have known tehy wouldn't be there, and they should know you spent the money beforehand.  O Tell them to come pick up a cookie.

Over $2?! Really?! I would have told them to suck it up buttercup...but I guess that's why I'm not a teacher.

I like what a PP said...you thought the world was going to end or your child would get hurt...and now you're upset about $2?! Ugh.

Can the MIA kids still get the craft (or supplies at least to do it at home)?  That way they'll get something for their $2.

Oh,yeah, they will still get the craft because it was an individual craft for each kid. It's just Christmas themed, but it will be on their desk when they get back!

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard, and I'm glad your principal recognized that.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

LAME!  They knew when the end of the world was going to happen.  They knew when your party was as well.  And yet they still decided to donate that $2.  And FYI to those parents, it's a DONATION.  Do they go back to charities and ask for their money back?  If their kid was sick from daycare would they ask to be pro-rated?  I never return any money that was donated for whatever project, event, etc.  Even if a kid was unable to make it to a field trip I wouldn't give them their money back.  It's a "tough luck" situation.

Holy crap.  $2?  It's tough to be a teacher sometimes...

***pgal lurking!***

If they kept the kids home for the end of the world, well then they don't really need the $2.00 huh?? I think they are being ridiculous- THEY chose to keep the kids home, you were just trying to do something fun, what we hope all teachers do for our children. I'm glad your principal backed you on this- some people are absurd.
