Elf on a Shelf?

I'm gonna start by saying I think it's creepy. I plan to avoid it at all costs, but a friend of mine has had to start doing it this year because all of the kids in her DD's class have them & have been talking about them. One little girl's elf brings presents everyday. Hmm

No real point to this. Just something to talk about.

I'm ready to climb the walls, too, buddy.

I love our elf, Oliver. DD loves him too. He doesn't bring her presents and he's not a "mischievous" elf because I don't really get that. I literally just change his position in the house each night and DD likes to look for him. It's just a fun little game we play for now.

I bought one for the kids, but this lazy mama hasn't taken him out of the box yet. Embarrassed

I do like the idea of it, though! I think it's cute. I can't wait to do it next year. Although, the idea of bringing gifts with it everyday is ridiculous! That's way too much for a child IMO!

this is ours too its more like a hide and seek game for him to look for him. he doesnt get that he is watching his behavior making sure he's good, we havent said anything like that to him at all.

That's the way I thought it was supposed to work. I have a thing about figurines, so that's where the "creepy" comes in for me... besides, lol I do good to remember to feed the dogs every night.

I'm ready to climb the walls, too, buddy.

I love our elf, Jack Candlestick! He's just a $5 stuffed doll and we don't do the tattling to Santa thing but he's so much fun. Ours sometimes bring gifts, mostly dollar store things like blinking necklaces or jingle bells. He also brings little Christmas board books.

Ours is mischievous, too. One day he put red crepe paper all across the kitchen door and sat on the other side of it with a chocolate doughnut so DD had to rip through it : ) He's also drank her chocolate milk while watching the Reindeer Cam and made her sparkly playdoh and snow angels in glitter, leaving the mess behind. Nothing a hand vacuum can't handle! Big Smile

DD loves telling people what naughty things Jack did.

We did the behavior modification stuff a little bit but she doesn't get it. I did put the elf in the bathroom tho to encourage DD to pee and poop on the toilet.

I have no plans to do this. I think the elf it comes with is creepy looking. If I were to ever do this, I would certainly substitute a cute elf.

I do not understand the naughty elves. Aren't they supposed to be watching for good behavior? So why would they give examples of naughty behavior? That makes no sense.

Also, presents every day is overkill, even if it's from the dollar store. I don't need more crap around the house. I certainly don't need 25 more dollar store junk things.

DS is not a fan of our elf Sad He doesn't do anything too mischevious, but we just switch his position every night and try to convince DS to find him in the morning. Every time DS does find him, he knocks him over and says, "Outside, Elf!" or "Bye bye, Elf!" Oh well, maybe he'll like it more next year!

Would that really put you over the edge? Like, might have to call Hoarders because of some blinking necklaces?  Wink

Considering that pretty much of all J. and A.'s toys fill up about 5 laundry baskets and I think that is way too many (based solely on my hatred of having to pick up the d@mn things), it just might! (I'd insert a tongue sticking out smiley here, but TB or my computer won't let me.)

FWIW, I am so not a keeping tons of things kind of person. In college I considered moving to someplace so I could live in hut merely so I wouldn't have much. The day you see me on Hoarders will be the day the world really ends.

I am the same way. People tend to be shocked at how little toys DD has. We're a pretty minimalistic, eco-friendly house...which is why I am happy to splurge this month on a few of the knick-nack types of things I never buy. All in good fun.

Cute! I think this is fun~ I'm sure if you continue to do this you DD will have some fun Christmas Season memories.

I'm all over this next year. I think DD will love it, and I will have fun coming up with new things to do with him/places to put him. I thought she was a bit too young this year. I don't think he'll bring gifts though, maybe the odd chocolate treat.

Ours elf Gus is good, I guess. It never occurred to me to make him do bad things. Though DH did orchestrate a 3way between Gus, Barbie and a princess doll.

He brings her small toys and books. Like Christmas type things that she can play with before Christmas. Dollar section mostly.

My brother jokes that our elf is gay so one night DH fell asleep and I caught Oliver trying to unbuckle his pants.

My girls love Pinocchio, our Elf. It was a gift last year from a family friend and DD1 hated him for 10 seconds then fell in love with the game. This year it is all about her hoping "he will finally hide in a tricky spot" and she loves racing Elena to find him first. He doesn't bring gifts-- I'm with barnwife in ridding my house of dollar store trinkets at every turn-- and I'm not inventive enough to have him get into trouble but I love those ideas!

We have two Elves. The girl one my Mom bought for B last year. I bought the boy Elf, but I didn't know about the one from my Mom until after we had already opened our Elf. And I decided to keep them both.

But B doesn't like them. I think they weird her out, and she won't let me read the book to her. So mine don't change their locations anymore. Just out as decoration. Maybe next year...

Yeah, I totally disagree with you, but many people seem to think it's creepy.  Lucy loves Jolly.  She loves reading his story and she loves waking up each morning and finding where he is hidden.  She also likes to report to Jolly that she has been a good girl and to tell Santa.
